Hello all,
I will be heading to UAE soon for employment and am interested in pursuing a doctorate in free time. Could you recommend a nearby university (within driving distance of Al Ain) that has a Ph.D. program in Education, Mathematics, or Computer Science? Thanks. |

I'm not aware of any accredited institutions (or even quasi accredited institutions) that offer Phds in UAE.
I do know people who have started them by distance with the University of Southern Queensland (I think) in Australia |

UAE University in Al Ain has begun accepting applications for PhD studies in all colleges, according to their website www.uaeu.ac.ae |

But... would you want to get one there? I'd fear that it wouldn't be recognized anywhere outside of the Gulf...

It is useful only for Arabs who wish to remain in the Arab world. Arab doctorates are esentially fraudulent in quality. |

British University in Dubai is your best bet - check their web-site.
Or the EdD from Exeter but does anyone know anyone who has actually finished that programme? |

I believe Sunderland and Exeter are both offering doctorates (not phds) here in the UAE....Nottingham, too. |

Before you make any step forward, check this:
http://www.caa.ae/caa/DesktopModules/InstPrograms.aspx
and read the accredited programmes BUiD IS recognised, but Exeter PhD programme is still not in the UAE, although it is fully accredited in theUK and hence the world. GO Figure! |

The real problem of trying to do the PhD here in the UAE is that your PhD courses may (probably will) conflict with your teaching schedule.
And that then kills any ability to take the courses. |

Thanks to all for responses. I do like the Ed.D program that BUiD has. I agree with Eisenhorn. The only problem will be trying to find a program that offers evening/online courses. |

USAMATHMAN- Did you make any decisions about the doctorate? I am thinking about doing a PhD while there, too. I just wanted to know if you'd found out any more info.

Hello teecher,
I did do some research on doctoral programs at British University in Dubai. Check out their website. This was the only school in UAE that I could find that had an established doctoral program. I think they are accepting applications for August 2010 semester. Otherwise you may have to go with an online university. However, I would be very careful as I have heard that some schools are a bit skeptical of 100% online degrees.
Hope this helps.

I believe one of the extension campuses in Dubai offers doctoral classes.
Might check Bath University (UK), as well. I think they advise a number of doctoral students from the UAE.
My impression is the UAE is designed for working, not learning. |

BUiD is moving to Dubai International Academic City, which makes it easier to get to from Al Ain.
Back to my question about the various Leicester/Exeter (etc) EdD programmes, where you have tutorials or seminars sometimes at weekends: does anyone know of anyone who has actually completed one of these? I can think of a few people who started one, some of them years ago, but none of the ones I know are calling themselves Dr yet.
I know of people who are grinding away at regular PhDs at UK institutions - doing a few supervisions in the summer vacation - as the British PhD is pretty well pure research there are no classes as such to attend during the teaching year. |

Why not try Phoenix University, Arizona - they offer "coursework Doctorates" by distance learning or online. They might not be REAL PhD's but most UAE institutes don't know that yet! |
