There seems to be so many different types of schools available to work in. What advice do you have regarding which type of school to apply to and which ones to avoid? TIA. |

For a first time job in China I would go for a big English training center. Usually you get paid more, there is some training provided and in most of the bigger places lesson plans are prepared for each class...all the teacher needs to do is pick it up, read through it and teach the class. Usually you'll be in the office for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with a maximum of 5 lessons per day (which is translated into 25 teaching hours per week). The only downside is that only some of the big companies in China province accommodation, but for me this is a benefit because I can choose where I want to live.
Plus, getting jobs with them means direct contact, so no need to go through a recruiter to get the job. They will also handle all the insurance and visa issues for you.
You can check out these English training centers:

Wall Street Institute

EF English First

Shane English School

Aston English

The above are some of the better ones doing business in China. They have branches in many cities throughout the country, so usually you'll be able to specify where you want to teach. Also, here is a more comprehensive list of schools in China...all with direct contact:

I forgot about this website...mostly the stuff you find is in terms of university jobs with a the odd high school thrown in as well. The best thing about it is you contact the schools and universities directly and usually they will offer you accommodation and other perks thrown in as well (unfortunately the salary will be lower...but so will the working/teaching hours).
Here is the link:

Cheers. |
