Anyone heard of this school, the La La Pony English Club? It sounds like a mighty fun job with a lot of children, a kind of song and dance learning. Anyways, I have an interview there Friday in Ogaki. This may be my way out of the Nova situation. |

With a name like that, it sounds like it's set up to humiliate foreign teachers right from the beginning.
Bob: Where did you apply?
Mike: The La La Pony Club.
Bob: Stop screwing around. You gonna tell me the real name or what?
Mike: (Shows the job ad to Bob)
Bob: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Mike: (goes home)
Bob: (5 minutes later) Hahahahahahahahhahaha |

Seriously, though. If you can't put it on your resume later without looking the fool, I would avoid wokring at such places. Or you could call it LLP English Club perhaps... |

One thing you should always remeber to ask is the travel time...how far do I have to drive everyday? Do I get paid for travel time? Do I get paid for travel expenses. This is the question you must ALWAYS ask if you are going to work at a conversation school. Dont forget!
So is this just kids? Like a kindergarden? If so, it does sound like a cool job...
when you go to the interview you HAVE to ask them why they named their company that.. |

Yeah I guess it's all kids. They made sure to tell me that "A sense of humor is the most important!!." I told them I play guitar and can sing English to the kids. It pays better than Nova and is only 28 hrs a week. I am going to be pushing hard for the job. |

No, I think you would have been working 37 LESSONS a week at Nova, not 37 hours, with one lesson being 40 minutes. So that's 24 and a bit hours of actual contact time, if you add on the 4 mins I believe they officially give you per lesson for prep, it comes to just over 27.
So about the same as this place you're considering. But bear in mind that 1 hour of kids, and especially young, energetic ones, is equivalent to a lot more adult small classes in terms of how much it takes out of you physically. I've no idea how many kids classes Nova would've given you, but I expect it'd have been less than half your total hours.
I think you're doing the right thing looking for alternatives to Nova, given its current situation, but look very carefully. 28 hours of actual contact time, doing "edutainment" with energetic kids is likely gonna leave you pretty exhausted. Yet on the other hand, the 28 hours they pay you for might include a decent amount for preparation with a much more reasonable amount of contact time than 28 hours - find these things out before you accept anything. If you're going there for an interview, try and have a look at some classes being taught and see if you can have a chat with a present or former teacher.
Quibby made a good point too about checking how much you'd have to travel. It sometimes also pays to be wary of "sense of humour required" - it might mean they want someone who'll make lessons fun, which would be fair enough, but I'm sure there are plenty who've worked in eikaiwa who found this to be a euphemism for "keep smiling whatever we throw at you".
Good luck anyway. |
