Hello,
I have been teaching now for a couple of years. This year has been really hard finding a good job because of the crisis. I was wondering if I should take the CELTA. I know it would look good on my CV ( I have like 4 years of experience plus a TOEFL certificate) but before I pay over a 1000 euros I want to know what you really learn in the course.
Has anybody here done the EFL certificate course at Indiana University. I like the idea of doing a course online. |

Four years is not 'a couple'. It's more than a few.
I think you might want to think about giving it a miss, and looking at an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics instead. Sure, it'd be more expensive, but a lot more useful in the long run. |

See my PM about MA programmes. If you want to stay in TEFL, do an MA, if you want to work in a school, get licensed. |

And check out your acronyms. TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. What's your native language?
Or did you mean TEFL? In any case, it must not have been too memorable.
ASton University has a great masters in TESOL program.
Best,

I have known some people who enter CELTA courses as experienced teachers. They get a lot out of it in terms of developing skills and they have an easier time being shortlisted for the better jobs. I'm not saying that the advocates of more advanced courses are wrong, merely saying that CELTA is a possible way forward. |
