I was scheduled to start a job in ZhuZhou, Hunan province in January, but was just told that the winter camp portion was cancelled due to a government advisory, and instead of starting in January it wont begin until March 1 when the school year starts. does anyone know if I should try to find another job that starts sooner, or will I have to wait until March no matter where I apply? Thanks for any help. |

I don't think that everything in China is on hold because of H1N1, but what type of job would you be applying for (Winter Camps, Uni, language schools)? Are you asking about jobs in Hunan, or the whole of China? |

It is not odd to hear that some special programs are being cancelled because of China's H1N1A "preventative" measures, but there are a large number of universities and colleges, public and private, forcibly keeping students on campus and not allowing them their former privilege of coming and going as they please. You know, like pretty much every university in any country outside of China and North Korea. So, something to consider if you are looking for another job: even if you are allowed to come and go as you please, if you are working at a university or college, your students may not. This does dampen things if your'e new to China, because some of the genuinely decent students you befriend would be the ones who introduced you to your new city; aiding you as you find those little things you need or desire that you might not have been able to find because you are unfamiliar with the area. A lot of this is bullshit and won't keep H1N1a at bay, nor reduce risk of an outbreak, but this is China, and the government and universities will use any ruse to control students, cut costs, cancel programs, bullshit the FT, etc. |

The Chinese Spring Festival strarts from Feb 13, so Chinese schools' winter holiday may last this whole month, and the final exams may happen at the end of Jan.
So you may find some vacancies in some English training schools, EF or Wall Street English e.g. rather than the government schools. |

You're lucky you even know when they are My schools never seem to know until the week before. I really can't understand how these schools have known Spring Festival is coming for the entire year and they still can't work out when exactly they'll be finished with school. |
