can anyone provide me a rough estimate of how much rent is for a one bedroom, kitchen (with dishwasher), 1 1/2 bath, furnished apartment in all three main areas: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Al Ain, and generally speaking in all of the UAE. Not needing anything extravagant, yet still want something that is decent in appearance. As I said, this has been asked continuously, so feel free to PM. Thanks. |

Actually it hasn't been asked all that often because most employers in the UAE discussed here provide a flat and a furniture allowance. That is a very broad question because I suspect that prices not only vary widely by Emirate, but the current economic slowdown may/should have an effect. Have you tried google?
... and I don't recall anyone ever having a dishwasher - I suspect it would be considered very extravagant.

Whether you get appliances or not is also depending on who you rent from. Some HCT'ers in Sharjah got all their white goods (including dishwashers) in the buildings along the corniche - others have to buy their own. Some people in Fujairah got appliances others no. In Dubai, same thing as well as Abu Dhabi.
Perhaps there are some people who pay their own rent (or have friends who do so) who can speak to current pricing. If you check the classifieds in the gulfnews.com you might get an idea of what is currently on offer and at what price. |

We had a dishwasher in Abu Dhabi. Seemed normal US standards to us, considering we were given a DH44,000 furnishing allowance by the PI. |

Apparently those of us with quite a bit less than that didn't have the extra cash to buy that one more appliance. Actually neither of my kitchens in Abu Dhabi even had a place to put one - new construction at the time. (same problem in Oman and Kuwait) I don't recall seeing many dishwashers in my years in the Gulf... I would hug mine back home every year during summer leave.
I did have friends who had dishwashers, but she was usually from India or Sri Lanka and also helped with the cooking and cleaning... and/or the kids.

A few landlords in Abu Dhabi provide all the white goods ( = a stove/oven, fridge and a 2-in-1 washer-drier) as well. It's not entirely uncommon. I was lucky enough to get a dishwasher, too! |

As a ballpark figure, I guess my very spacious 2-bedroom flat in the centre of Abu Dhabi goes for around AED200 000,00 a year, but possibly closer to AED250 000,00. But of course, employers don't pay that if they have old rental contracts from 10 or 15 years ago. They're probably paying around AED90 000,00. |

OK, somebody settle this for me since I don't feel like looking it up. Is "white goods" purely an Indian-English term? It's not from the UK, is it? |

Also another point to consider in International City is the sewage problem? From what I recall from a previous thread there is open sewage in the area, which may be related to low rental prices? |

Not sure where it comes from originally, probably the UK... it is perhaps one of those out-dated term that came from the times when all appliances were white.
But to me... it means that a place provides bedding, towels and such - if it is a rental.... so it has morphed in the US. I remember stores advertising "white sales" to sell such items when I was a kid. I don't recall that it ever referred to appliances.
But again... we digress...
