I'm a 25 year old female, if I go and teach in Indonesia (there are a few places that are hiring) will I be safe from kidnapping? I have heard there is a lot of sex slave trafficking in Asia, and I don't want to be easy prey for this type of operation. I'm a tall white girl, I think I would stick out like a sore thumb, no? |

Oh bless.
Sweetie, as one tall white girl to another, I suspect you're at greater risk over there than over here. |

Hi Zorobabel, I was referring to the OP. He/She couldn't possibly be serious. |

I am serious. If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's not my fault. I am asking this question for people who do know, obviously. |

Kamala
Whilst I understand your concerns, it might be worth reading the posts on this forum to understand the kind of things that can happen here which are more likely to happen.
Asia is a big place and Indonesia is only a part of it. White Slavery and people trafficking I doubt still happens in the way your links suggest although it does happen to other races of different nationalities which is a terrible thing.
As an American female in a school teaching English I am sure you will be around other western teachers and will socialize with other western people. I have a couple American females working for me and they are more concerned about toiletries, cheap shoes, sun tans and having a great time.
If you are worried on this level I would suggest you really research where you want to go and speak to people who work and live there and I am sure some of your fears will go. |

I guess that's what she was doing, but we ended up being rude to her.
In answer to your query, Kemala, I have never heard of any Western women being kidnapped in Indonesia and sold into the sex trade. If something does happen to a foreigner in Indonesia, such as a murder or disappearance, it will make the headlines, and your embassy will be pressing answers. Heck, I even saw a news story on a foreigner getting his wallet stolen on the busway, as if that was news.
Crime does happen in Indonesia, just as it does everywhere in the world. As a woman, you will need to keep your wits about you because Indonesian men can be overbearing at times and you will get a lot of attention. Then again, whether they admit it or not, that's why a good portion of Westerners like Indonesia.
Generally speaking, though, most Indonesian cities have significantly lower rates of violent crime than major American cities. |

Thanks for your replies, Father McKenzie and Zorobabel. That's good news to me. Not that it is good news that trafficking in people happens, that is. But I'm glad to hear that the American embassy is responsive.
I just began researching, so I will look in to what goes on in Indonesia. It does look like a fun place.
My only concerns were being kidnapped, and also possible anti-Americanism. I understand that Indonesia is the largest Muslim country outside of the Middle East. So that is the other thing I am a bit wary of, but I will check it, and I welcome any other advice you can give a newbie
Thank yoU! |

Okay, Kamala I'll bite.
From the link you provided above, recruitment of trafficking victims comes in 3 forms. You should ask yourself the following;
1. Are you living in absolute poverty?
2. Are your parents considering selling you for debt bondage? In return they may offer your family cash (or goats)?
3. Could you be tricked or lured into prositution?

Rayman has asked some valid questions? Traffickers target weak, dependent, vulnerable woman who are easily taken in by promises of a 'better life' (...and who can blame many of them?). They are not going to target an independent, confident western woman with a strong network of family and friends back home. They don't want the problems that would ensue.
If you see yourself as weak and vulnerable, you shouldn't be travelling far from home. If you welcome the challenges that you will encounter being a single woman, travelling alone, and not knowing the language etc.... , and you have a modicum of common sense.... then you will probably have a great time!
..............................................................................................
PS. Mr K... Your post appeared while I was typing the above. I hope you don't see this as an attack on the OP. I'm just pointing out that Rayman was only trying to 'help'. |
