Hi All,

I used to post quite a bit on Dave's a few years ago.

I've just come back to say if anyone is thinking of working at the BC in Tripoli, you might like to PM me first.

I saw the job ad and was considering it. What do you know about it?

Can you PM me please, I can't PM you. I had to stop my years of quiet lurking and make an account and now it won't let me PM until i've posted at least one message Smile

EnglishBrian,

I sent you a PM but no reply. Are you one of those hit-n-run posters who says someting criptic then disappears, leaving us to ponder what "might be" ? Or are you gonna come clean and tell us - diplomatically - what you know ?

Confused

From the tone of EB's posting it seems as if all is not well at the BC in Tripoli...now I have no idea what his exact feelings are as he hasn't posted but here's my opinion of both the BC and of Tripoli.

Firstly - Libya itself. It isn't the easiest of places to be and if you're used to the nightlife and lifestyle you usually find in Asia/Europe then no doubt it will seem very very boring and you'll be wondering exactly why you made the decision to move. Even compared to most of the Middle East it can seem pretty boring.

Saying that though - everything is what you make it - there are opportunities to get out and socialise and it's not always with work colleagues. I have several colleagues who joined the archeological society and spent the weekends heading off to see interesting bits of rock etc, I know a couple of others who went diving, and then in the warmer months you can just sit in a cafe a relax with a decent book.
Tripoli itself is.....nice enough - the old town is an experience. Shoppingis limited - there are a few western chains (M&S, Monsoon, H&M) and a few decent supermarkets.

As far as the BC goes - and this is only from what I've heard and seen - things seem to be ok - hectic at times as most BCs are, there are the usual opportunities to train up as examiners and the atmosphere in the teachers' room seems to be ok. I've worked in a lot of places - some good, some bad and had I wanted to stay in Libya then I would have quite happily worked for them.

Kaw, thanks for posting the above. Your comments are welcome and diplomatic. Wink

Not every language institution is a wonderful working experience for each and every one of us, but seasoned survivors of EFL learn to read between the lines of many posts here. I can only assume that EB has some "beef" with the BC in Tripoli but is reluctant to post or PM any of us.

Once again, your input is most welcome.

Hello KAW!
Nice bit of diplomacy there!
I have lived and worked in Tripoli, and as kaw has said, it is what you make it. You need to take plenty of books with you, or find a local DVD shop where you can stock up on DVD's for about 1 each.
If you are interested in historical ruins, then join the local archeological society and have some fun.
If you are female, the shopping is limited to pashminas and gold, unless you pay the high mark up on items from a few of the western shops kaw mentioned.
I left because the place I was working had major problems, but given the opportunity, I would gladly return.

I'd also be very interested if anyone has up-to-date info on the BC in Tripoli.

I keep seeing the Serte Oil Company advertisements on several job boards. It sounds like a good deal. Ive seen negative posts from several years ago, but not much recent information. I would appreciate any and all accurate current information on this outfit, or any leads on similar jobs, i.e. fairly well paid rotations in oil camps, etc. Thanks.

Monorail Cat,

What are you doing on this forum?? This is for TEACHERS of the ENGLISH language!! Not people who debase it by writing and I quote with utter distaste.

"^ I can't PM you 'cuz I don't have enough posts yet. Send me an email to cheeky_arab2004 at hotmail.com and I'll tell you that way. Don't wanna post here 'cuz of "rulz".

You want to express yourself like this? Go do in on a rapper forum or something similar. Do not write such rubbish here!!!!!

"Duffer", go get a life and stop being an under-qualified prole. English is a descriptive language, not prescriptive, in case you hadn't noticed. Ever evolving, like its speakers.

Pray tell, since when did you become elected to set the standards of prose on this forum ? Mad

Maybe you should look to your own posts before criticising others, e.g. "confoosed" instead of confused, "Ba" instead of B.A. ... Shall I go on ? Have another G&T dear. Rolling Eyes
