I've worked in both, but usually browse the Russia and CIS countries forum for info when I'm in the mood. Try inquiring there.
In Baku I believe ELS and LSD used to pay $1500 monthly, but I'm 5 years out of date. British Council don't hire anymore.
There's money in EFL in Kazakhstan around the Caspian if you have good contacts. I don't - only rubbish ones like $1000 monthly in Atrau with ELS.
In Almaty I could get $50 an hour privately about 3 years ago, but the economy went pear-shaped like everywhere else. Full-time now $1000-1500 monthly is usual.
Jobs come up now and again here and on tefl.com |

I worked in Azerbaijan from July 2008 to July 2009 for LSD; it was a good job. Unfornately BP has f_____ them over, reneged on its contract and cut the money they pay (BP is THE employer in Azerbaijan), and the money stopped going up and the vacation time took a dip. Still not a bad job, though I doubt they are hiring much now as BP was also talking about cutting back on how many of its employees it would be willing to provide English classes for. But even on the new and probably unappreciating salary (inflation is an issue in Azerbaijan), on LSD's salary you can save money there. Be aware that though it is no Saudi Arabia it is a conservative Muslim country in many ways. |

I also look at Russia and ex CIS forums re Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan
I've worked in both; I agree LSD Baku is the best school to work for although the inflation/revaluation of the Manet means the pay doesn't go as far as it used to but you can save. Beautiful places to visit but the area of Baku and surroundings extremely polluted DONT DRINK THE WATER! . Lang Sols Baku is alright for a while just not great management (this is second hand from friends who worked there.
I liked Baku but it is a bit rough.
Kazakhstan has a distant relationship to legality to put it mildly and the visa issue is a bit of a problem as you will not get a legal work visa without the company paying bribes. So they'll send you out on a business visa and you will have no rights and no recourse when they satart paying late and short. (my experience; dont expect to get anywhere near the money you are promised in the contract, or flights for that matter)
ALMATY is beautiful but limited in pay.
Atyrau is really a hardship place; all the other expats are on a good wedge because they work for oil and gas companies so the expat lifestyle consists of expensive bars with real ugly expensive whores with a bad attitude and grease monkeys. Muggings are common the pollution is terrible and the weather atrocious; nothing to do and nowhere to go.
IH are recruiting its grim.
Kazakhstan International Training; crooks. Don't pay. won't pay. |

While stuck in the gulf and looking for work it was the name LSD that attracted me to Azerbaijan; and the owners were straight go figure |
