Sounds reasonable to me but then I'm a total 'newbie' to the middle east. Basic offer for a position teaching in state school in Abu dabhi. Two thousand pounds per month + housing provided, I've an idea UAE is an expensive place to live but could I reasonably expect to save/transfer half of this per month?

Definitely doable assuming that you are single and good at budgeting your money.

It's all a matter of lifestyle. If you need the newest and fanciest cell phone, fastest internet on offer, sat TV with every possible channel, a flashy car, and a couple or three nights a week eating and drinking at the hotels... you can burn through all of it pretty quickly. Just like everywhere...

But... at least you have no rent and taxes. Laughing

Last summer, I had no problem living on 6,000 AED/month. (saved the rest)

It's a matter of lifestyle. I had basic internet - not the super high speed. I didn't subscribe to cable or satellite - and I had a 5 year old Nokia Mobile (and drove a 10 year old car that had long since been paid for).

When I was feeling way too hot --- I'd drive into the mountains of Oman - and find a breeze (yes - you can find this).

I ate 5 AED shawarmas for dinner , and 5 AED manakeesh for breakfast. Then treated myself to a grilled chicken and humus dinner once a week (Fridays).
