I've been searching the forums for a similar thread but can't find one...either I'm not entering the right search terms or it hasn't been asked (which I doubt) - so my apologies in advance to the long-time posters if this is a frequently asked question.

I'm in my late 20s and have a what's referred to as an Associates degree - I actually call it my diploma since that's what it says; I obtained it after successfully completing a 3 year college course. I also have over 4 years experience in my field - which is Communications & Public Relations.

I'm very seriously considering teaching English abroad but most requirements read 'minimum of Bachelors Degree required.' Associates Degrees/Diplomas don't seem to be acknowledged.

My question is - before I waste time & money obtaining a TEFL or TESOL, will my Associates Degree & Work Experience be sufficient?

Thanks for any insight.

I think that depends on where you would like to teach. I'm not too sure about other places, but for Japan, one either needs a Bachelor's or either ten years (if I'm not mistaken) of experience in said field. In the case of the Bachelor's it's mostly for Visa purposes.

Your experience is not in teaching, is it? My first suggestion is to get teaching experience. Either that or finish a degree equivalent to a bachelor's.

Few countries take people with associate degrees, as you are learning. So, make yourself marketable. Might also help to know what countries interest you, so people can let you know of the requirements.

Japan work visas require a bachelor's degree or 3 years of experience, not 10.

My mistake. ^^ Don't know why I thought it was ten years, unless I'm thinking of other fields.

You can teach in Taiwan.

The minimum they require is an Associates Degree and a TEFL certificate.

Try HESS.

So, what will it take for you to get your bachelor's?
