Is anyone else disturbed by the way kids are put down in schools here? I was shocked today by a class teacher humiliating a 4 year old in front of the class because they hadn't done their weekend homework (call me oversensitive if you like). In practical terms this means the kids don't pay attention unless I behave like their class teachers.
Does anyone have any coping strategies (apart from changing countries?!)? Confused

Well I have the same thing here in Korea. The teachers are humiliating them sometimes quite cruelly, not to mention paddling them or sticking them on the palms. By the time I get to their class, they feel so happy and free to see me, knowing I cannot/would not paddle or stick them, that they dont listen AT ALL. So I knwo exactly your predicament.

I really dont think there is a cure. Trying to modify teaching methods is a naive, idealistic bunch of crap. ALl that suggestion does is put the pressure on the foreign teacher to try to solve an unsolvable problem, which the Principal knows full well.

Ahhh, yes, part of the Joy and Glee of working abroad.

Thanks but there's no point in switching schools as this one at the top end of the market and it's actually worse in others (I learned the Turkish for "I'm gonna beat the crap out of you" -geberterim seni-when a kres/preschool owner was angry with a 5 year old)
Thanks though Eccletic-at least they don't hit them at this one.....
At the end of the day-just as with the issue of teaching by rote-I suppose I have to either keep my head down and get on with it without resorting to abuse of any kind, pass the buck and get the class teacher to do it or find something else to do.
Trouble is alarm bells are ringing in my head for when my kid starts school here in Turkey.......

Go to a private University and then the students will try to humiliate you in front of the class. Twisted Evil Move around until you find a decent place to work with decent students. Forget about finding decent management.. many here are of very poor quality and have barbaric management skills. Good luck

I don't think you can compare the treatment of children in a European/N. American setting to the treatment of chidlren in Turkey or other places. The cultures are different. If you think students are treated bad now, you should have been here 11 years ago when the mili egitim still allowed corporate punishment!
