I'm thinking of doing the DELTA in Europe 2010, but would appreciate any advice/assistance you could give in relation to exactly how the DELTA will help my employment prospects. I am indeed a Late Starter, and am heading closer to 60 than 50!! I currently have one year of ESL teaching experience, and am not looking to hang up my whiteboard markers for a wee while yet.................. My other option is to head back to my country of origin and do a one-year post-grad teaching qualification. Which one would best serve me in gaining further teaching in overseas countries. I'm currently teaching in China. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

A DELTA isn't going to do a whole lot for you here in Poland. Although certain, more seective schools seem to prize them (i.e. the British Council)

I think DELTA is good if you want to be a teacher trainer or director of studies, however. That's why I'm doing one. Smile

I can only really speak for Italy, but if you were aiming to be a DOS here, then you'd need more than just a DELTA and one year's experience. (Don't you need more than that anyway to be allowed onto the course?) Schools would typically ask for a number of years' teaching experience, Italian language skills, good knowledge of the market etc.

It's worth finding out about DELTA vs post-grad teaching qualification in the countries where you'd ideally like to end up teaching.

Yes, I agree about choosing the country before you choose the qualification.

You need at least 2 years of post-CELTA teaching exp. before you can do a DELTA

That's not 100% accurate.
I have taken this directly from the Cambridge ESOL website:

Who is Delta for?
Delta Modules can be taken at any stage in a teacher's career. They are suitable for in-service teachers of English in a variety of teaching contexts e.g. adult, primary, or secondary teaching contexts, and are intended for an international audience of non-first language or first language teachers of English.

Candidates taking Delta Modules One, Two and Three will normally have an initial ELT qualification and will have had at least a year's ELT experience but these are not requirements.

However, it is true that one should have a certain amount of experience before pursuing a Delta.

They require two years of exp for module 2 - at least this was true when I interviewed and signed up for M2 last summer.

As for M1 and M3, I think 1 year is enough. What is required may depend on which center you do the DELTA with.

They would probably let you do module 1 provided you didn't screw up the pre-course task too bad.

Module 2 requires a pre-course task and interview before you are accepted. So if you aced these then who knows? Chances are they would tell you to hold off for a while on module 2, however.

But do you really want to do a DELTA right after a CELTA? Consider this: Remember the pain-in-the-ass, 3-page or so lesson plans you had to do in CELTA? The 'sample' lesson plan they showed us for DELTA module 2 lessons today was 19 pages. Shocked
