I'm teaching English in Shenyang, and want to visit Beijing this coming weekend. Unfortunately, my passport is still with immigration for processing, and I won't get it back for two more weeks.

Do any of you know of hotels in Beijing that accept a copy of my passport and an official letter from my school stating that my passport is with the Chinese government?

Or am I stuck in the water if I go there without a passport? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

You could try one of the 'sauna hotels' (can't help you with recommendations in Beijing though, sorry). I stayed in several of these and was never asked for passport or ID. They usually charge according to the length of time you wish to stay there (often from 3 hours up) and many/most have top-notch facilities comparable to a three or four star hotel. Only drawback is that the maximum stay is usually something like 12 hours, so you will have to checkout with your luggage, and then check in again.

Awesome! Thank you very much. I will go there this weekend and post information about the logistics of getting to one should another traveler find themselves in this predicament.

All hotels in Beijing are required by law to take a copy of your passport and log your stay with the PSB. Without your passport alarm bells are gonna start ringing in that hotel.

In my mind you are taking a risk in coming to Beijing with no passport. I wouldn't do it. Just my two pennies worth.
