Right now I'm searching for and applying to M.A. Applied Linguistics/TESOL programs in the U.S. The only thing is, there's not much information about ranking the best programs. It's kind of like look for good schools and see they have an M.A. TESOL/Applied Linguistics program right now. For any of you out there, are there any programs that you think are the best or have been ranked as one of the best for one reason or another? For this concentration, there doesn't seem to be much information floating around. |

I really don't understand you people who insist on asking such vague, subjective questions!
"Best" is a purely subjective thing and ranking is a matter of opinion. Both are utterly meaningless.
What do you want to get out of your MA degree? Do you want to get into the American government indoctrination centers (public schools)? Do you want something more theoretical than practical? Do you want an emphasis on other languages (some Applied Lingustics programs are designed for people who want to teach foreign languages in the US)? Figure out what it is you want from an MA TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics degree and look for a program that closely matches what you're looking for. |

The Monterey Institute of International Studies, SIT in Vermont, Columbia, ... and I think the University of Hawaii is well-regarded.
I thought the OP's question was perfectly clear. Whether or not you agree with rankings and/or think they are purely subjective, there is a generally agreed-upon list of programs/universities that are considered good. Just because you disagree doesn't mean that there are no rankings.

Thanks D for the suggestions. Couple names there that weren't on my radar. |

I'm doing mine at the University of South Florida. I think it's a great program and my professors would probably agree. The professors are terrific and the students are pretty close since we pretty much take the same classes together from one semester to the next. Also, it's a mix of theoretical and applied linguistics. Although the program is technically called an MA in Applied Linguistics: TESOL. There are also two internships so you will definitely get teaching experience and plenty of observations at our campus language institute.
Best of luck. |

Dear evolving81,
USF - my old alma mater (B.A. 1974; M.A. 1978). How's life in Tampa, these days?
Regards,
John |

Hi John,
Interesting to see another USF grad. Is your MA from USF in Linguistics? I believe the program here was the first of its kind in Florida. My BA is also from USF (Anthropology in 2004) and I also work here. I'm sure things have changed on campus since you've been here. Actually they've even changed quite a bit since I graduated.
Thanks for all of your great advice here on Dave's.

Dear Mitch,
Nope, my MA's in English Education. I very much doubt there was even an MA in Linguistics offered while I was there (although I did have to take some courses in Linguistics.)
I worked part-time for the audio-visual department (showing movies) while I attended - great job. But I'm quite sure things have changed a lot in the intervening thirty years. Lord knows I have.
Regards,
John |

As mentioned before, it really depends on what you want to go into. I'm at Brigham Young University right now for their TESOL MA. They have a great program with some really well known faculty and connections to the world of TESOL. They also have an prestigious English Language Center that is basically a laboratory for MA students to practice teaching but has full time faculty as well and hires graduates. I have another friend at Northern Arizona University doing an MA in TESOL and applied linguistics and they have some great faculty there as well. |

Do you have to be LDS to go to BYU? My old Spanish teacher had his masters in linguistics from BYU Hawaii and he was LDS. |

Hey,
I saw your post on here and had ask how your program is going? I've been living and teaching English in Japan for over a year now but am returning to Tampa at the end of May. I'm applying to USF and am really hoping to get into that program. Any advice/knowledge you have that you wish someone had shared with you about this program? |
