Hi board, I just accepted a job with EF Cempaka Mas purely out of desire to get back into work quickly having finished an enjoyable year with a private school (Jungchul) in Korea. I wondered if anybody knew anything specific about this school (Campaka Mas) or its location that they could tell me.

My second question is about things which you cannot get easily in Jakarta. For example I learnt during my time in Korea that they do not sell Deodorant... Things like that.

If anybody could help me with either query I would be very grateful. Thanks.

To be honest there are very few home comforts that you can't buy in Jakarta nowadays, though prices for imported foodstuffs can be high. All manner of anti-perspirants and deodorants are available. I think the only things I have never been able to find anywhere are proper mousetraps (the wooden ones with metal springs) and rhubarb. Wines and spirits are horribly overpriced, even at the few Duty Free shops which will serve expats who hold a resident permit or KITAS.

EF Cempaka Mas was my first job in Indonesia when it opened in 2004. As far as the EF schools go, it wasn't a bad place. The owner was honest and I got paid on time. His daughter, Anissa was running the show at reception at the time.

The disadvantage is it's quite far from the main part of town. About a 45 min-1 hour trip depending on traffic. The accommodation at the time was at the Cempaka Mas Apartments, a 5 minute walk from the school. It's also in the same complex as a large mall, ITC Cempaka Mas containing almost everything you need. To catch a movie or have a beer, there's Kelapa Gading about a 10-15 minute taxi ride away.

If you have any more questions, ask away.

would have to disagree with that...

$25 for a bottle of JD
$17 for jim beaml
$16 stolichnaya

last time i looked anyway (at end of november last year).

prices have been know to fluctuate considerably tho and some duty free shops are a fair bit cheaper than others... but wine is pretty expensive tbh...

pretty pointless post this actually.... I should really be doing something more fruitful..
