Could someone give me information about gyms in Dalian? Are there any reasonably priced ones near the city center? Also, is it a good place for cycling - are you able to get away from the city to nearby beauty spots readily? Any other activities I'd be interested in, e.g. sailing.

I'm looking into working at Dalian but I'd like to make sure there are suitable venues and activities to do during days off work.

Cheers

Problem with nearly all so-called beauty spots in China are the crowds - which means noise, over-pricing, traffic-jams, an ever-presence of folk screaming in your ear or even pulling your shirt-sleeve to try sell you a piece of worthless trash - and of course all those brave young men who try to impress the females by fearlessly screaming 'heyluuuuuuuuuu' at any passing Lao Wai.

This ain't China knocking it's just the truth - if you do visit tourist areas - try mid-week and out of season - far more civilized!!!!!!!!!!

As for Sailing - normal Chinese style sailing is a row-boat in the local park!!!!
Of course China has sports sailors that compete in international events - but elite hand-picked sportsfolk and the pastimes of ordinary people - well they seem to exist in different solar-systems.

I belonged, briefly, to the gym at the Swissotel, in the city centre. I don't remember what it cost but it couldn't have been wildly expensive or I wouldn't have been able to afford it. It was a pretty good gym--never crowded at all, nice steam room, yoga lessons.

I think Dalian is surrounded by beaches and beauty spots but honestly I never really explored them after the initial few weeks of wandering around. I was far more interested in the overnight train to Beijing, where I enjoyed spending weekends.

There is a Peking Opera performance every saturday--or at least there was one when I was there--in a small theatre hidden away in a back street downtown. I'm sorry but I cannot remember more specifically where; I myself did not know about it until I stumbled upon it by accident almost at the end of my time there.

There's a Bally's at MyKal, on Xian Lu, but I've never been there. I wouldn't feel safe biking unless it were somewhere like Kaifa Qu.
