when i taught oral english, i found idioms useful to teach in class. lots of good idioms can be found here:

English Idioms and Idiomatic Expressions

Meanings and Origins of Phrases, Sayings and Idioms

i've compiled a list of the five most commonly used idioms (in my part of the world) for each letter of the alphabet and only focus on those ones, since many idioms are regional and occasionally go out of date. those are the ones i would teach in class and subsequently email to the students after they were taught. sometimes the origin of an idiom goes way back in time and needs some explaining, which resulted in me learning something as well.
