Does anyone have any insight into the bird flu in Vietnam...how bad is it there? Should I cancel my upcoming trip? I was going to go to HCMC.
thanks |

Unless you plan on playing with chicken s**t there's nothing to worry about. Avian flu (bird flu) is not contagious between humans. Eating chicken meat and eggs is not dangerous if fully cooked, if you could find any. The government has killed and made it illegal to sell and buy chickens and eggs. Most viruses can't survive if the host is dead and certainly if temperatures rise, such as when cooking the meat. The Vietnam government has been very good in the past, with SARS, and now about dealing and controlling dangerous diseases. Of course it's all self motivated. Vietnam lost an estimated 500 million dollars due to SARS last year, but they were the first country to become SARS free.
No need to get worked up. You're safe unless the H5N1 strain (Avian flu) mutates and mixes with human-flu viruses, but Vietnam and the rest of Asia can't afford to let that happen. |

The only real change I've seen is that chicken isn't available and KFC is now in the fishburger business. I haven't been to Chickentown in a long time but I guess they have converted too. |
