I am going to be starting a TEFL course in the Ban Than Ward, District 1. I've read that it is best not to start looking for an apartment until after I've found a job. So for the time being, does anyone have any suggestions for places to stay in the Ban Than Ward area? I've read that I should look for a place around the backpackers area, but does anyone have any specific places that they liked? I really don't want to spend more than $23 per night, as $23 x 42+ days adds up. Thanks for reading my post!

Just get your taxi to take you to Bui Vien St, district 1. Look up toward the left and you'll see a big 'Bobby Brewers' cafe. Any of the hotels directly opposite will give you a decent rate $12 - $15 a night. Some with breaky. If no breaky included, head down the road each morning to Lam's cafe and get a decent meal for 30,000 dong.

After checking into one of the above places at $10 to $12 a night, the next morning put on your most comfortable tenni shoes and either walk up Cao Thang or Cach Mang Tham 8 (CMT8) and just slip off into the many side streets like Dien Bien Phu as well as all the small alleys (hems). Don't take any taxi or motorbike, just walk. It will take you a minimum of an hour maybe 2, will see some mini-hotels that are away from the tourist street. Should be able to see something you like starting at $10 a night, which is still a rip-off anyways, but they've simply all raised their prices in unison (prices used to start at $5 a night, and they were real pleased to see you). Now they barely even bat an eyelash and try to raise the price as high as possible. That's Vietnam for you. Anyhow, go up Cao Thang street, well past Nguyen Thi Minh Khai.
