|
|
Hi All,
I'm a newbie on here so apologies if this has already been covered and I have missed it.
I recently applied for the ALT vacancies at HEART and was offered a provision term of employment which I have accepted.
Have had to send them some requested documents, which I have done.
Has anybody else here been offered a job and accepted? Or even anyone who is currently working with HEART? Would be good to have a chat with anyone who has. Thanks. |

I have the provisional contract but I have an interview with another school. I will see what the other place has to say first. |

I've also accepted and sent off the required documents, which have been received.
There are two threads relating to Heart further down this page, have a read through them. |

Even though Heart was on the bottom of the list as far as places to work for went, I sent in my stuff too. I just want the Visa. I can't help but wonder about something now. What if I get the COE from Heart and get my Work Visa. Could I use that Work Visa to look for a job elsewhere or am I chained to Heart, especially since no final contracts won't be signed until we actually get there anyway.

You own your Visa, so you can switch to something better if they start shitting on you. |

I sorta meant if I get the Work Visa before going to Japan, will I be able to look for other work prior to even heading over. At least I can say I already have one. ^^ lol |

ok cool, so its not just me talking with them then
i've also got an interview with Aeon later this month and am hoping that comes through as my friend works for them and have had good feedback so far from her.
the HEART offer seems cool, but the issue with not getting an official contract until you are out there and having met with the BOE kinda scares me. they have advised that everyone seems to pass the interview, but i don't wanna get a plane to japan to find out for some reason that day the BOE were not happy bunnys and turned me down. then i'd be buggered.
also, does anyone know what this "aerosol test" consists of? it seems weird to me, as this seems to be a test for any residue found on you. if i was to open a door handle which happened to be touched by someone who had been in contact with something illegal then it would also be on me without me knowing! |

You could... but you realise it's probably for just this reason that some smaller companies may be hesistant to sort people out with visas in advance; too many dishonest foreigners doing a runner as soon as they have the visa and leaving them in the lurch. |

Yeah, guess that makes sense. I was just wondering how that worked with a company where you don't even sign a contract until you actually get there. |

By all means, insist on getting the visa in advance. At least that way, if they screw you over after you arrive (decide they don't need you after all) or you find that your position is a total nightmare from day one, then you get out fast and search for last minute positions that require you to have a visa in hand. |

That's pretty much where I was trying to go with that. Just in case. I'll at least have a Visa in hand if things don't go as planned. I already sent in the documentation for the COE which I can take to my Japanese embassy. Through mine, it should take about three days to process the work visa, even though Heart said it'd take a few weeks to get the COE. |

Companies take a dim view of people who leave a job very soon after starting, especially when it looks like you might have just used a particular company for the visa. Potential employers may be very suspicious of that unless you have a very good reason for leaving the previous job that you can explain to them, because it makes you look extremely unreliable and possibly dishonest. Unless conditions are dire it is best to stay with your original sponsor for at least 6 months. |

I'll take the LOL in stride here, but I just want to add this.
You might get a visa before you arrive, but that lists an employer as your sponsor. Ditch them just because you found another job even before you land, and you are not going to make the sponsor very happy. That only serves to perpetuate a bad perception of the rest of us. Yes, some people will say "look out for no. 1 (yourself)" or even "all employers are unscrupulous" (a false claim). But, have a care for the reputation of others, too. That kind of behavior sometimes forces employers to put legalese or clauses in contracts that they shouldn't.
You may also have disappointed a great deal of students who thought they were going to have you for a teacher and signed up.
Moreover, you might think your visa is good for any teaching job, but it could very well not! Humanities visa vs. instructor visa, for example; they permit work only in certain venues and are not interchangeable. You'd have to ask for special permission to do the other visa's work, but if this is your real employer (the one you chose to ditch the sponsor), you may not even be given that special permission and would have to apply all over again for the right visa. |

Well, I guess I should be more specific. It's sorta like what the first poster of the thread said which kinda got me thinking about it in the first place...

That's why I was asking about the Visa thing and wondering if we would be allowed to look for work outside of Heart just in case for some oddball reason, after we get there, Heart says, "We decided not to hire you." I hope that it does work out okay, but just in case it doesn't, what options would we be left with?
In other words, if I was fully hired on I wouldn't up and walk out on it because I would have a job. I've had jobs I've literally hated or didn't care for the working conditions and stuck with it. The SunTrust job comes to mind (working conditions) and the job I had working as a food server at the old-folks home (hated). Stuck with 'em, though.
Edit: Reworded what I was trying to say in hopes of making it more clear. |

Just an FYI to a few people that have expressed reservations about Heart, I PMd the guy that briefly appeared in one of the other Heart threads and said he was a current employee. He said he had no issues with the company and that they had been fine to work for, and that the only problem he did have was with the school that he'd been placed at. If he was able to transfer to another school he was hoping to renew his Heart contract.
With regards to having to pass a BOE interview to get the position, I also had to stop and think about that, but it really comes down to your confidence in your own ability to get the job. Bear in mind that it would also reflect badly on Heart to be presenting ALTs to schools that got rejected all the time. If you're enthusiastic, friendly and ready to teach then I don't see it being too much of a problem. I was assured that no one has ever been sent away without a position, and have heard no horror stories to suggest this isn't true. I was told that there's a chance a BOE might not want the people they are offered, but in that event it's just a case of Heart working to match people up with suitable positions.
I am an optomist. |
