I've applied to the big eikaiwas with no real responses. Therefore I've tried the small guys. I interviewed at a local one, and the guy is pretty cool, but a bit too driven. His teachers teach 8 40 min classes every week. That's about what I'm doing now, and what I don't want.
Is this the new normal? A lunch break, and 10 min no-break breaks between classes? Or is this just another case of exploitation? |

Hard to say whether it's the norm. Don't even know if that employer has always done things that way or not.
I'd say he is just trying to get the most work out of his teachers in order to keep a thriving number of customers.
Don't like the working conditions? Don't accept the job / apply. |

Not sure if he's always done that or not.
I think there is a degree of getting the best, as overwork/overtraining ends up giving you diminishing results. I find that after 6 lessons(ie when I teach 7) I start really dragging, and by 8 lessons, I'm pretty much mentally checked out. Hence me really not teaching to my full ability, like I can when I teach 6 or so. |
