1. They will not pay the airfare to come in to work
2. For every hour of teaching they want you to prep for 2 hours.
3. You are teaching English without any grammar, which translates into goofy games with adults and teenage children.
4. If you don't fit into their culture you will be fired immediately.
5. If you are fired they put you out of the shared apartment within a day, without any help to get to the train or bus station. Just put you on the street.
6. The pay sucks.
7. The owner is an ogre.

All of this happened to a collegue of mine who went to work there. It was a nightmare and I would stress that you avoid it.

Hi Batman
Correct me if I'm wrong, would this be the English Academy language school in Alsancak, run by an Irish gentleman?

I worked at Academy a long time ago. These comments are completely unbiased.

Where are you commuting from/to? Unless the school is in a particularly dodgy area of Iraq or Afghanistan I do not see the need to be flown in.

2. For every hour of teaching they want you to prep for 2 hours.
When I was a newbie teacher I wanted ME to prep for 2 hours for every hour in the classroom.

This is the communicative approach. There is grammar. It's up to you (the teacher) to teach it subliminally

4. If you don't fit into their culture you will be fired immediately.
If your face don't fit maybe it's better to be fired immediately rather than later. Surely this applies in any workplace?

5. If you are fired they put you out of the shared apartment within a day, without any help to get to the train or bus station. Just put you on the street.
If you've been fired, why should your ex-employer subsidize your accommodation etc?

6. The pay sucks.
That's a matter of opinion. It used to be true but can you find a language school in Izmir now that pays better?

7. The owner is an ogre.
No! Surely not! That can't be the same man I worked for..... Did you ever meet him?

I no longer work for anyone (thank God!) When I worked at Academy it wasn't perfect, nowhere is. The above comments are written by me for my satisfaction only.

With all due respect FGT, your comments were not very constructive and a tad flippant.

Take no notice of FGT. He's based in Izmir, knows the guy, and has had his nose knocked out of joint.

How much notice do they give the people they fire?

I'm sure FGT wouldn't react too kindly if he were fired without notice and kicked out of his house the next day - especially after having paid to fly (possibly halfway around the world) to work there.

I'm no longer based in Izmir and have no knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the departure of the original poster.

I worked at Academy for 8 years. During my time there, one teacher was hired who was almost immediately found to be unsuitable. The boss found alternative employment for that teacher and helped him to move (within Turkey) to take up the post. The last time I heard, he was very happy in his new position.

If a company feels it necessary to sack an employee, they must have strong grounds to do so. Under those circumstances, why should they continue to subsidise the ex-employee?

If the poster felt that their dismissal had been unjustified I'm sure he would have made that plain. If the dismissal was justified then I'm with the management on this one.

Hiring a foreigner and firing them later is one thing.

However, to expect them to vacate the premises with belongings and find new lodgings on the SAME DAY as being fired is stupid, criminal and unreasonable. 48 hours to vacate would be a bit more reasonable.

In the US and Canada there are laws to prevent this kind of thing.
This may be Turkey but I'm almost sure if you consulted a lawyer, the evicted party would have a leg to stand on.

Most Turkish schools usually rely on your ignorance of their laws.
Or as one landlord who once tried to take advantage of a friend of mine once said "This is Turkey. You are a foreigner. You have no rights."
Fortunately, she had Turkish friends and they called the man informing her of her rights and he backed down quickly enough.
