|
|
I am a bit confused... I got a job with a private Eikaiwa, and for the COE, they say they require photocopies of my degree, CELTA, passport, and letters of reference from current and previous employer. I was offered a job though a while ago from a crap company, and at the time, they said they needed the original degree, as well as a resume with all my schooling, going back to elementary school. And that crap company didnt ask for letters of reference. Why the discrepancy? |

I was offered work with Heart English School as an ALT. Here's what they asked for, for the COE:
A photocopy of your passport photo and ID page(s)
Record of last entry and number of visits to Japan (if applicable)
2 passport size photos (4cm3cm)
Either Official Transcripts and a copy of your degree certificate or just your Original BA/BS degree. An official transcript will list the type of degree, the date awarded, and evidence that the student met the requirements set by the awarding institution.
Any additional degrees, certificates, or official records demonstrating experience, employment, or knowledge of teaching or the Japanese
(language, or cultural studies)
Place of Birth (If not stated on your passport, evidence of your place of birth)
For the "additional stuff", I sent in my Certificate of Attendance for when I was working on my CELTA. I had to quit early due to being hospitalized. I also got a letter showing that I was employed by my county to work as an Assistant Teacher.
I guess every place does it differently . |

Go here. http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/english/tetuduki/index.html
See List of Documents and then click on the application for Certificate of Eligibility. You'll see what is required:
* Application form 1copy
* Photos (4cm3cm)1copy (The photos must be clear enough without background, must be taken within 6 months before the application procedure and cover upper body with uncovered head.)
* A return-mail envelope affixed with stamp(s) worth 380 yen (for the recorded delivery purpose)
* The supporting documents to be submitted on the occasion of application are shown in Table 3 1copy
(As applicant sometimes needs to submit document material(s) other than stipulated in the Immigration Control Act Enforcement Regulations, please refer to your regional immigration office or immigration information center.)
* A document that proves the status (if a legal representative or agent submits the application form on behalf of the applicant)
Anything beyond that is not technically required for your COE, but the employer may still want the stuff for himself. Seems silly to ask for your education records that far back unless you are not from a native English speaking country. |

I think nowadays almost everything including the kitchen sink is required for applications. There are minimum requirements but no maximum ones.
It depends on how safe the hiring party feels. In these days of insecurity and easy duplication and illegalities and things done in a shot via email and phone and skype without ever meeting face to face, the more the requirements.
Besides if you have nothing to hide, then nothing to lose, it'll work out well. If you have, send references even if not asked for. |
