I am curious? A lot has written about and by older male FTs, but I haven't heard or read anything about older female FTs in China. Are there any/many and are they mainly in the big three cities.
I'm currently in a smaller city, and sometimes feel that I'm the oldest female FT in Middle Kingdom China (well past 55). Perhaps I should move to a bigger city - any thoughts welcome! |

My experience with two elder ladies, both ex-journos, both from Canada, was not fun.
They were washed up ladies who refused to return to Canada, even though they were bitterly unhappy in China.
I can drink a fair amount, but they could drink more than me. Both were in their early sixties. I'm in Xiamen, not a big city, but very popular with foreigners. |

I know of a US female teacher in Luoyang in her early 50s, but, yes, you're right, there aren't many. I can only speculate as to the reasons, but competence is competence as far as teaching goes. I've never seen any discrimination against females of any race. |

Can you define 'washed up'? Sure you weren't just bitter cos they could outdrink you?
I'm only new to China but I worked with an older female FT in Mongolia and she was fantastic! Her knowledge was considerable, her experience & approach in the classroom (gleaned from that experience) made her the best & most popular teacher at our school & she was just an interesing woman who had left a fascinating life. I had another older female FT friend in Korea who was similar.
Bring on the older female FTs I say....will be one myself in another decade or so. |

Washed up = bitter, burnt out, pill popping, athritic, hagged and miserable.
I have met a couple of cheerful elder ladies.
And I've met one that was hell bent on destroying my life - she was forever backstabbing me, snitching on me, fabricating stories about me.
But hey, it takes all types. And in China, all types turn up. |

We have a few older female FTs at my school (Zhengzhou). They are the ones that make home cooked meals for me occasionally They definitely get a lot of stares whenever we go out (not sure if it's because they are much older or because of the blond hair) |
