So, thought I'd settled into China nicely, first and foremost, I work at Xi'an Kid Castle *sigh*.

I know, I know but I was naive and the contract they sent me was written in the Chinese name of the school and skewed, nothing came up, but anyways.

So things were going ok, but the last two months things related to pay have frankly done my nut in.

Before I go any further, I'm not hiding behind any alias either, if you know Kid Castle in Xi'an my names not exactly hard to hide so whatever.

Anyways, firstly, last month I go to check my account, and oh, I'm 1300 RMB short, I signed a contract for 5400 and I end up being paid 3000. So anyways, question why, but am told the money has been taken to 'pay for heating'.

'Don't worry though, it's only about 800 RMB, you'll get the rest back', guess how much I've received back? This isn't in the contract and apparently it's never been heard of, I don't understand how the Chinese dive their hands into the pay and take what they perceive to be the right amount, but I guess that's just being Chinese.

This month, due to our school moving and them not painting in time, I miss 10 days of school, and my salary this month was only 3,000 or so, which is paltry I know. Go to check now, I've been paid 2,200.

No explaination and now everyone's 'away on new year'.

What the hell am I suppose to do with 2,200 RMB considering I've got medicine to buy? I already had the landlord knock to ask for the bills before he jets off for Chinese New Year, and I paid, so no excuses there.

How do you budget properly when you get told your contract is for 5,400RMB and you check your bank and are paid 2,200? Honestly, is it even possible?

And if you worked 2/3 of the month and ended up with 2,200 rmb, how many would just pack their bags and be done with it?

It's strange because although Kid Castle received a battering, and for some things rightly so, I do like the people I work with and the children, but that's just slave labour if they realistically expect someone to live on 2,200 in one month...

You said that the school took away money for "heating" but you still had to pay the landlord yourself for "bills"?

Anyway, I wouldn't even work for 5400 RMB per month unless it was at university level with a couple of hours per week...so...yeah, if you're treated badly and are not being paid for honest work you do just leave. Try to get your money back after CNY and once you get cash in hand try looking for another job quick and get the hell outta there...don't even bother giving them notice if you're treated like this...have them find out one day they lost a teacher and see them scramble to find a replacement to avoid a shitstorm from the parents. Perhaps this will teach them a lesson.

While your situation is deplorable, it is not unique.

Before you follow the above advice to do a midnight runner, carefully consider the downside.

I suggest you calmly discuss the matter with your employer. Do not raise your voice. Do not use harsh terms like "breach of contract."

Do not threaten in any way, particularly to go to the PSB or provincial FAO.

Just explain that you need the agreed upon salary and ask when you can expect it.

Keep all your options open and do not burn any bridges.

Chinese respond well to civilized negotiation but react in extremes to threats.

Money is respect, and they are not respecting you at all.
You say that you like the people, but while they may be smiling to your face, it sounds like they are definitely laughing behind your back.

I can understand playing some of the games that need to be played, but playing games with money should not be tolerated.
I would suggest following the advice of politely asking to be paid, and then leaving as quickly as possible.

I was under the impression that salaries at kindergartens are among the highest due to the hours and hassles involved. 5,400 is not a good salary.

You my friend are being taken for a long ride down "rake the funds" road.

Frankly speaking, you need to stand up to them. I know it's hard given the timing and everything, so I do feel for you.

PM me if you need any serious help. I will be there.

Man, why do people come to China and work for peanuts? You'd make more working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart back home.

My advice is pick up some private students or quit and move on.

There is more to life than money.

Money, Money, Money = Chinese mentality.

I make around 10k a month for 10, 90 minute classes a week. My apartment and internet are free.

I will manage a Wal-Greens next year and make more! I sure do need something to fill my spare time!

This happened to me on a job. I asked a friend for advice and took it. I told them that I wasn't going to work another day until I got my pay. I got it the next day.

They're seeing how far they can push you. Obviously, pretty far 'cos they tried it twice.

If you're going to donate your working hours, find a worthy cause to work for, not a business.

I've worked for them too, so I totally understand your pain. Although you have had different issues to mine.

Same with me.

When I stayed in the KK apartment I paid for my own bills every month through the apartments agent. There was no involvement by KK in any aspect of the apartment.

Also 1300 is waaay too much for heating in any case. I paid 600 during December 2007 which covered the heating which was essentially "on" every day, almost 24 hours a day.

I'd recommend going into them with any of the other FTs in the school, and politely talk to them about this. Frankly its not good enough, and obviously something they're trying on you because you've been too nice. I know its annoying but they don't really mess with FTs that will stand up to them. If they feel they can get away with something, they will.

be polite. Don't get angry. Stick to your guns. And if all else fails, suggest that you will do the bare minimum for your contract while working there. That means no pressies for kids, no demo's, no extra hours, no covering for other FTs, no external kinders etc.

They should get the message since they're pretty experienced with handling FTs.

I don't get this part. Are you staying at the accommodation provided by KK or did you go solo and get your own? If you took a KK apartment, its going to be owned by KK or another english school in the area, and leased by KK. So it sounds like KK are trying to screw with you.

Its Xi'an... you can live on 2200 easily. But thats not really the point. If you accept any of this, it will happen again, and likely be worse in the future.

No idea. I wouldn't. I'd fight for my pay. I enjoyed working in KK with the exception of any dealings with management. It was only when I had conversation with the two owners that everything went to hell. So for me, i'd look for my money (which i earned), try to reason with them, and if all else fails start looking for other work in Xi'an. They'll claim that they can blacklist you (their favorite tactic) but they can't. Not really.

have a look at Aston. Good work, although its very different in hours worked, and the types of classes. Issues with the quality of apartments and repairs, but overall a decent school in Xi'an.

They don't. They expect you to roll over and just accept things, and they to get more money from your inexperience. I learned in KK that the contract is just a sign that negotiations have just begun, not that everything is settled. Its the type of company/franchise where you need to fight for any benefits (work or otherwise), and fight to keep them.

Kukiv... I think its rather obvious what I meant... that outside of dealing with the owners (Management) working in KK was fine. It was only when I had to "talk" with them about their new changes to course material, working hours, length of classes, etc that it got bothersome. It got outright horrible when they tried to break the contract on a rather common occurrence.

I stayed for almost my full contract and left with the blessings of the bosses. I did them a favor and got to leave early due to family commitments at home.
