Let us imagine for a moment that a couple accepted jobs in Shanghai. One of the jobs is in downtown Puxi and the other is in Pudong. Is it possible for one of us to commute to work without too many headaches or should we shoot ourselves now? |

It's all a question of proximity to the metro lines and time spent travelling. If either of you worked near a metroline, particularly the one in Pudong, then it wouldn't be too bad. Granted, riding the metro during rush hour can be a bit tight. I don't know where you might find a map of the metro on-line, but I would guess there would be something, but it may not be in English. It also depends on where you want to live. I would certainly prefer to live in Puxi.

Your response is encouraging. I did find a map of the metro and it looked "doable" but as we all know the reality can be different from what appears on paper. I guess we will have to rent an apartment halfway between our schools, somewhere on the metro line. Thank you once again. |

why is you school (or one of them) not offering you a flat? usually as part of the contract the furnished flat is included. some schools will have you pay utilities but many do not (they are really cheap)
get a cell phone. bring your laptop. connect to the web (also cheap)
I looked for a flat away from the university - to escape mainly.
but deceided the price of free was a good deal.
and the flats I could afford were fairly horrid.
now if you have $1500 - $3000 to throw at a flat, there are many really nice places. (yes, USD not renmenbi.)
good luck |

I thought long and hard before signing. The salary is 14 000rmb/month so I guess that compensates for not supplying accommodation. I certainly can't afford US$1500/month - more like 2500rmb. Oh well, I guess I'd better buy lots of mouse/rat traps huh? |
