Hi All!!

Upon advice from this forum and from reading other various bits ad bobs I have learnt that the best way to get a job is to go to Bangkok and look whilst there as there will be more options and you get to see what's what.
The earliest I could go would probably be April, but more realistically, May. Is this an ok time to hit the pavement in Bangkok and secure a job?

Many thanks for your time!!

Unless you have been recruited from overseas by a top school (because you are a certified teacher, MA, PhD etc.) you should always come here and look around.

There are "agencies" which hire you overseas for basic TEFL jobs, but these often prey on the young and gullible. Most (not all) of the jobs will be in 2nd-rate schools with low salaries. There are many posts on various sites asking about so-and-so agency.

You need to bring cash to live on, and to come here in person. Check the schools, speak to people etc.

The unis start towards the end of May. Schools a bit before. You are cutting it fine if you wait until late.

DO NOT come to the Big Mango anytime in April. It is extremely hot then, Thais tend to be on holiday (Before & After Songkran) and most employers are not available to interview you. The best time to come is 1st week of May when there will be plenty of desperate Thai government schools looking for ESL teachers. Problem is they offer very low pay anywhere from Baht 15,000 - Baht 30,000 Monthly so you will have to live like a Thai on these wages. Also note that you should be prepared to bring at least Baht 100,000 over to survive as Thailand has become very expensive lately due to the strengthening Baht currency which has across the board pushed up prices dramatically! Shocked
