|
|
Hello, I'm looking for advice:
I have a bachelor's degree in science, a California teaching credential, master's degree in education, 6 years of inner city teaching experience in Los Angeles, and for the last 6 months I have been in Shanghai with a private english afterschool program. They were a great way for me to get my foot in the door here in shanghai, and they were also one of the only places that would hire me, I'm an ABC
I actually really love my job, it is so much fun and stress free, just has really awkward working hours and not a lot of vacation time. The pay is ok at 10,000 a month.
My other friends have constantly told me I should be working at a school where i can get way more money. Like an international school. And one friend suggested Taiwan.
Questions:
1. What kind of money can I expect with my qualifications?
2. Would working at an international school be substantially more work?
3. Any comment on the state of the Taiwan education market vs. Shanghai?
4. How is the most efficient way to search and apply for these jobs? Search their websites? What about International School Services? (ISS) Is it worth it?
Thanks for any advice you can give me |

Do you want to stay in Asia?
If I was in your position, I would explore the Middle East. I'm not sure if that is a lifestyle that you would want, but with your qualifications, you could find an excellent job with good pay. |

I am in the same boat really- not much help!! I would actually love to go to vietnam, but think it may be better to go to China first as I'm still new at the ESL teaching (I have been a teacher in the UK for 3 years).
Do you think you have learnt a lot from teaching in Shanghai? do you feel ready to be more independent? |

OP, it sounds like you are qualified for the upper tier Asian based American or British international schools (there are many). Yes, it would be substantially more work, but also substantially more pay. A good place to start to look into this would be the forums on the following site:

Well just to give you an indication: if you were working at Shanghai American School (an international school) you would be getting around 30,000 RMB a month plus other benefits in their package. I think the 100% coverage medical with worldwide coverage is a benefit that is hard to put a price on when comparing to EFL.
Why didn't you look at international schools? I keep saying this to certified teachers, and I guess I should keep it a secret. |

Well I didn't at first because the job that I am doing right now is the type of stress free job I wanted to do. I was not thinking of money at all when I made this choice. Now, it is a little different. I want my savings to continue growing and I feel a ton more relaxed after 6 months of just stress free life. |

Is that before or after tax?
Intl schools can pay very very well. Though I will say, the one I worked at, only one, but I have friends who have been at others, is that salaries vary A LOT. So ther's a bit of tension between teachers.
That' being said, good money can be had in intl schools. THere can also be a lot of stress. It's kind of hit and miss. If you get a good school, you're golden. |

I find that hard to believe. I work at a smaller scale IS in China and my after taxes salary is 21000 RMB. I have to pay my own housing though. The bigger IS near me (50km away) pays about 25000RMB a month and provides housing, which is a damn good deal.
SAS is supposed to have one of the best packages in Southern China...
You have a master's and 6 years of experience. That should put you pretty high on their list. |
