Does anyone know anything reliable about these UAEU news: http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100209/NATIONAL/702089829/1010

Is it for real? Who is affected by this?

This sounds like one of those regular threats to "cut staff" if you don't put more money in the budget games that are played worldwide at institutions that are supported by government money.

I would suspect that it would mainly mean lower hiring at UAEU next year... if anything...

HCT are expecting a similar cut.

The government proposal is to fix the budgets according to the number of students who actually appear in the classroom NOT on the number of students who enrol.

This is bad news for places such as HCT where the number of warm bodies who actually turn up falls far short of those who have enrolled.

Staff reductions and benefit cuts to follow and no doubt those swimming in the HCT pool will be treading water for a very long time.

The gravy train has well and truly left the station.

This isn't the first time. I was in the Gulf when the price of a barrel of oil dropped to $10.

Feast or Famine... so it goes...

Government tertiary institutes have yet to receive their budget allocation for this academic year.

These are real cuts. I know people who have been fired mid-contract. How bad it all is depends on which Faculty it is. All a bit of a nonsense as you do actually need senior staff to manage a PhD programme.

My contact at UAEU Al Ain (she has a senior position) tells me that the 7% cut has been confirmed and that departments are now deciding where the axe should fall.
