I am thinking of going to Taiwan to teach english in the next few months. I have been told that Kaohsiung or Taichung are good place to live, but i am also interested in Taipei.
Can someone tell me what the pros and cons of living in these places are?
Or just let me know what your own experiences are of these places?
I am looking for a place which has most of the following:
-somewhere where it is easy to meet other foreigners.
-somewhere that is lively with a good night life and plenty to do
-somewhere which is near the sea or a even a beach.
-somewhere with plenty of english schools.
can anyone help me? |

I'm not sure that the place you're talking about exists in Taiwan... Or maybe even anywhere. Sounds awesome though! Let me know if you find it!
Seriously, though... I have the most experience with Taichung but I spent some time in Taipei as well.
I think Taichung is an awesome place to meet foreigners. The foreigner community is really fun and outgoing for the most part. There are a lot of live music events on most weekends. The nightlife leaves something to be desired. There are really only a handful of fun places and you're bound to get tired of them after a while.
The cons to living in Taichung are few in my opinion. But it is pretty polluted (like any other city in Taiwan) and there isn't as much nightlife as Taipei. Big name bands/DJs virtually NEVER go to Taichung. But sometimes they might swing by Taipei. Being in the middle of the island is pretty convenient if you want to travel around Taiwan at all.
But there are no towns that are on the beach w/ a huge nightlife and lots of English schools. Sorry but it just doesn't exist. The closest you can get is Taipei and trips to I'lan. Or maybe Kaohsiung with trips to Kenting.
Good luck! Hope this helps. |
