It would help if you told us if you were male or female. |

Have you ever been to Jeddah? It's ridiculously overrated. |

I think the British Council are looking for male and female teachers. Check their website or contact the Jeddah office directly.
Not as many holidays as the universities, but good housing...and you get to keep your passport.

Surely, Uncle Scot, it depends on what you are looking for. If you want a vibrant, seemingly relatively more cosmopolitan(?) place then J-Town is the one. Plus it's coastal so climate will range from pleasant to hot. Obhur (north of Jeddah) has some nice beach spots for families. There also quite a thriving eating out culture there. In terms of things to do for families, you are limited to the beach and malls (which have large food courts, theme park rides and arcade games within them).
Riyadh seems bigger, more aesthetically pleasing, better organised, better planned, better roads, cleaner and also far more things to do for families like parks and museums and quite a decent zoo. The malls have good shops (pretty much most, if not all the western brand names), but do not seem as glamourous and glitzy as the ones in Jeddah - perhaps it's cos they actually have things to do outside of theme park rides etc. And oh yeah, Riyadh gets COLD!! Most people have combined AC/heater units but oil-filled radiators tend to do the trick far better. You have historical sites in Dir'iyah, all the cultural exhibitions, expos, janadria stuff all happens in The Big R. If you want the beach, then Khobar is about 3-4 hours drive away or even take the train. |

Dear Asda,
Having lived/worked in both, I'd say that Jeddah is Better. However, your points are all relevant and accurate.
Regards,

As I've said before, I've long been of the opinon that Riyadh gets a bad press, on this board and elsewhere. Particularly vis a vis Jeddah. Yes, the latter has the beaches and the relatively 'liberal' lifestyle (though I think the latter is somewhat exaggerated, especially by Saudis) but Riyadh is the capital and the country's richest, largest and most well-maintaned city. That may not be saying a whole lot - it most certainly is not Paris or London - but in many ways it is a more livable city than Jeddah with its woeful infrastructure and appalling traffic.

I agree that it does get surprisingly chilly - if only for a few weeks - but c'mon, it's not COLD compared to what most WEstern expats would call cold! The reason it feels cold is because the city isn't geared up to cold weather. Besides, many people quite like the (very) relative chill of a Riyadh 'winter' - even when it's chilly, it's almost always pleasant, with no rain and blue skies. Rather like a perfect spring day in Northern Europe.

I disagree that Riyadh has more to offer than Jeddah in terms of 'things to do'. Apart from the beach, there's nearby Taif and Obhur, and obviously Makkah for Muslims. Of course, neither city is great in terms of 'attractions' but this is KSA, after all! |
