I have an interview with JET coming up, but I'm still not too sure what to do for the sample lesson plan. I taught for a couple of months part-time at an independent eikaiwa, although I found the lessons focused more on actual conversational practice than on learning, so I'm not sure if doing something in a similar style would be a good idea. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: I apologize if something like this has been posted before, but the search function wasn't working for me.

Perhaps you are bringing your own language learning experience into your thinking here. There is a marked difference between procedural knowledge and declarative knowledge. Believe it or not, the one thing that Japanese learners of English have (in my opinion at least) is too much knowledge about grammar, rather than the experience in using it effectively.

Fluency is a noble outcome to aim for, but is, perhaps, not desirable as the goal in a ~15 minute demo lesson. However, JET ALTs are intended to provide support, and I've heard of ALTs being given the "games" role in Japanese classrooms. Perhaps a fluency target wouldn't be a terrible choice, if the rationale behind the choice were clear in the lesson plan.

I am not a JET ALT, though.

Nothing wrong with that in a JET classroom.

Alright, thanks for the input. I was under the impression that we had to come up with the whole lesson plan ourselves, but I heard from a friend that they give you the topic you'll be teaching about (e.g. clothing, animals, etc.). I guess I'll just have to wait and see and cross my fingers!

Just do a search for 'lesson plan template' on the web, maybe add 'esl' and at least you'll know the structure.
