|
|
Hi,
I am starting a masters program that also leads to K-12 certification in TESOL. Once certified, can I only teach ESL at an international school? Or would I be eligible to teach elementary school as well? Obviously ESL would be my target, but I do know that a lot of these schools have vacancies at the elementary level.
Thanks. |

What country(ies) are you interested in?
As for Japan, the minimum requirement for a work visa is any old nonspecific bachelor's degree...period. With that you can work in a conversation school, business English agency, or mainstream school (as an ALT).
Get a teacher's license and a couple of years' experience in your home country, and you can work in an international school as well. |

Ok thank you. I was wondering if certification/license in K-12 TESOL would allow a teacher to work in other subject areas at an international school? I'm curious if you're restricted to your area of certification, or if you can teach other subjects as well. I've also noticed that many public schools in other countries (UAE, Taiwan) are requesting certified teachers. I guess it varies a lot of private language schools. I am getting the M.A. as well to (hopefully) maximize job opportunities. I currently work with adults and enjoy that as well. |

Find some international school websites (the actual schools) and see what they're looking for. One source for a list of member schools is www.ibo.org. I don't know where you're doing your K-12 TESOL certification but here in the States many states require TESL educators to also have a general education certificate (at least in the elementary schools). For example, in Texas you would have to get the EC-4 (though I think it's now EC-6) Generalist certification along with the ESL certificate. |
