I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm having trouble getting Internet hooked up in my place. We live in Yuanlin in Changhua County, renting a real Chinese house. But the telecom company says we need a 2-year agreement for both regular cable Internet and the wan chai (sp?) USB key. We don't want to ask our CTs to guarantee a 2-year deal, nor do we want to pay for 2 years (I'm only doing a year).
Can anyone shed some light on this? Is there some option of a shorter contract or pay-as-you-go? Or maybe something "off the books"?

I had no problem getting ADSL installed years ago with Chung Hwa and had the option of signing a contract for 2 years to get free installation or not signing and having to pay installation. Who are you trying to get your internet with? Unless things have changed, I thought you could get a phone line and internet connected with Chung Hwa if you paid a 1,000 or so setup fee. Things may have changed? |

Hey, creztor. We're also trying with Chung Hwa Telecom (it's across the street from our house). Also, we went to a Far East cell phone store and asked about the USB plug-in and they mentioned the 2-year contract, too. I bet we're not understanding something (I don't speak Chinese but my friend speaks some).
It's hard here because Yuanlin is Taiwanese country and there's almost no English. |

Chung Hwa, forget the rest. The other guys are trying to sell you their wireless internet 3G access. You want Chung Hwa and either ADSL or FTTB. There is no need to sign a contract unless you don't want to pay setup fees. |
