i got this new job, and they told me i had to leave the country to get my z-visa, so i got all the stuff i needed, and went to thailand, got the z-visa. when i came back, the spring festival was just starting, so there was no one around to do the residents permit. apparently you have 30 days upon arrival to sort that out, and it was 20 days before they came back from holiday. when they did come back, i was a bit excited, and asked them to please do it quickly. i kept asking is it done? whats going on? but the manager kept saysing, dont worry, we're doing it...if there is a fine, we'll pay it. yesterday he fired me because the students complained about my lessons (the school never gave me proper books, so i was largely winging it) at any rate, thats unimportant now...the end result is that im left with an invalid visa, and no job...after i paid to go to thailand to fix this, and now ill have to go to hongkong or somewhere, pay a huge fine, and get a l visa...and then come back and get another job. im pretty upset. |

I hear dan has a good buddy at the Canadian consulate, maybe he can help..?
Another option might be to check with one of the recruiters? The term is going & there are schools needing a foreign face right now that might be able to get you through the next bunch of months..? Its not something one would want to do in regular circumstances but now, it might be one way you can turn one problem into another that might be less costly..?
Does anyone know a recruiter that has connections that might be able to help..?
Or, theres that thread about Escaping from China.might be some help there.
Other than those close to useless tidbits of advice,
I wish you Luck
& hope you keep us informed of how the process of getting out of this goes. |

You could try to contact your embassy.
So considering the Chinese's indirect way of communication, when a Chinese employer tells you to leave the country to get your visa renewed does he really mean it or is he trying to tell you something else?
Batman, I'm curious as to who that employer was, name and shame. Of course you're not obliged to satisfy my curiosity!
Is there anywhere on the mainland to get a visa? |

the employer was the Siwa group in beijing. the actual name of the school is some long name i dont clearly remeber but i believe they were associated with the beijing polytechnic university. the Siwa group is still advertising for new teachers, so if anyone out there sees the ad, and think its sounds good...watch out. they will make big promises, and tell you how wonderful the company is, but they wont do squat to help you, and look at the mess they left me in. |

At first, I thought the title of this post would lead me to some good and exciting reading....
Anyway, sounds pretty rotten. Looks like you have gotten some sound advice so far. Sorry I don't know much about Chinese immigration or where to turn.
But I sure am hoping the best for you... |

I would recommend that you go to the PSB office immediately. First ask the school to take you there, so when they refuse, you can tell the PSB.. Their interest is not in arresting you. You should also contact the province education bureau (waiban). How did you get your z-visa?
There are always schools looking. Where do you want to work. I only know schools in Henan. Check out Dave's. I like the Helen TEFL job site.
Good luck |

Damn, this sucks! It's like living on a knife's edge, you just can't predict how and when these things will happen.
I concur that a PSB visit will help with your visa situation. You did everything by the book on your end, so they should able to help you. The whimsical firing is another story. I'm not clear of the rules here, anyone know if you still need a release letter when an employer does this?
I wish you the best here, and that you'll get it sorted out.
