I'm an American with experience travelling abroad teaching English. I'd like to go a step further now and equip others to become effective ESL teachers.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I'm curious about different opportunities (ie. teaching abroad for certificate programs such as TEFL international... or teaching at home in a community college). What additional degrees/courses of study are required/recommended (I currently hold only a bachelor's degree)?

If you can point me to any links, schools, tips to avoid pitfalls or other resources, that would be great.

Warm Regards,

Diego

A part of my job is teaching teachers. However, I've got an MA TESL/TEFL, near 14 years of experience, and a CELTA equivalent (which isn't any big help on my CV these days, but did help back before the MA).

I don't know of reputable training centres that will hire a trainer without formal qualifications in the field. CELTA is a newbie level qual - I think you'd need at least a DELTA to land a training job with any reputable centre.

The usual standard is that you need:

-a masters degree in TESOL or Applied Linguistics to teach ESL to non-English native speakers at a university in the English speaking world (all coursework or coursework plus research or coursework plus thesis).

-a doctorate in the area to become a teacher trainer in TESOL or Applied Linguistics to native level speakers of English at a university in the English speaking world, and that's the level of publish or perish.

What's your BA in?

Since you don't mention, I'll assume it isn't relevant. If it's not a related BA, then you currently have no teaching quals.

Most cert training programs I've worked on require:

Cert or Equivalent

5 years or more post cert experiece

MA TESOL, Diploma, or equivalent.

Post MA/Diploma experience preferred.

Again, unless there's some surprise in your profile that I didn't spot in your post, you're a ways off from doing any reputable teacher training. While you don't say how much experience you have, it may not matter. Again, the reputable teacher training organisations don't count pre-qualification experience for much- after all, how can they know what an untrained teacher gets up to?

If I were you, I'd list a little more detail on yourself. From what I can see, though, you're likely still a few years away from teacher training.

Best,
Justin
