Hi,

Does anyone have an idea what the unofficial unemployment rate for foreigners in Japan is right now?

No idea-the national rate is probably about 4 or 5%. I would suspect the foreign rate isn't that high because if you don't have a job in Japan then you probably end up going home. Japan isn't exactly a country where you can afford to stay unemployed for long. Of course, teachers probably only make up a small percentage of the foreign workforce. Those Brazilian autoworkers are probably hurting right now.

Uh, not all foreigners here are dependent on jobs to remain in Japan. Some are spouses of people (Japanese or otherwise) who have jobs to support them. Others are students or people on cultural activities visas, unpaid internships, etc.

I can see where Hoser is coming from. While some foreigners in Japan are likely to stay even if they lose their jobs, many would just leave Japan, or even have to leave due to lack of a visa sponsor. Because of this the unemployment rate for non-Japanese doesn't reflect job losses in the same way that it does for Japanese people.

A lot of foreigners in the financial sector who lost their jobs after the Lehman shock left Japan, same with Brazilians who were in the car industry.

If you're here on a student visa or an unpaid internship then you're not unemployed. I doubt many foreigners stick around sitting on the couch all day and collecting unemployment cheques in Japan.

I didn't sit on the couch all day collecting UI, I was teaching private lessons.
