Does anybody know where would be a good place to teach English and do some scuba diving (same area) in Indonesia, except Bali? I heard Bali is a good place to do this, but as I understand, there are not a lot of teaching jobs in Bali for somebody with only a tesol certificate.

I've seen very few threads on this subject and can't believe there's nobody interested in this. Indonesia has some of the best corals in the world.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

There are many people interested in this. This explains, in part, why jobs in dive locations are hard to find and poorly paid.

I'd suggest finding the dive sites/areas you are interested in and searching for ESL jobs via google.

Many teachers work in the cities and head to these areas during vacation times rather than being poorly paid and working in these areas.

Thanks Spunkmonkey,

Thanks for the reply, I was getting worried this was off topic for some reason.

A good bet maybe, would be getting a job in Surabaya and then heading for Bali on your vacation time or weekends for scuba diving. How far is Bali from Surabaya? Can you get there in a day? Are teaching jobs hard to get Bali without a degree?

I'm really trying to work towards an Diving Instructor Certification, then I can work and teach English wherever I want to go. At the moment, I only hold a Tesol with no degree. So this is one way to sideline the degree dilemma...and have more choices. Maybe you can do both...teach and dive. Does anybody know somebody doing this?

Food for thought!

dantana--

Don't want to rain on your dreams here, but you need to look at some realities.

For one, immigration and employment laws for Indonesia. Try looking here if you haven't visited this board about Indonesia http://www.livinginindonesiaforum.org/forumdisplay.php/39-Laws-Visas-and-Documents. Recognize most schools will contractually state you can only work for them to get a KITAS and cannot have second job. So diving would be a hobby (wink-wink.) Indonesia is very protective of its workers.

For two, the job market is tight right now for teachers. Many ex-pats from US and UK escaping economic problems by trying to teach
overseas. Jobs postings have serously declined in the past few months. Englishtown EF (Denpasar) used to regularly post positions but I haven't seen one in months.

Expect low pay. You will make enough to live comfortably, but will need to be a bit frugal.

Surabaya EF, KELT and TBI advertise the ease of geting to Bali on weekends. I don't know if this is true as I'm on west Java.

For three, I like many people, would give a certain part of my male anatomy on the left side to get a teaching job on Bali. It's where everyone wants to be. Jobs are few and far between. Everyone wants the paradise location.

Good luck and let us know if it happens. Very Happy

I haven't been here in a while, as I was teaching in Korea but now I'm seriously going to Indonesia for a year.

Then, would anybody teaching in Indonesia had some experience taking diving lessons while teaching. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

u might be better off looking up PADI or NAUI and finding their authorized centers and contacting them for information rather than this board. i cant really help u because i was certified before i got here. yes, there is some amazing diving and even in jakarta there are some nice sites in the 1000 islands. check out lonely planet, or other travel/dive sites for much better info than u will be able to get here. before there was an english teacher who was a diving instructor and he offered private courses ( he didnt get many) but he went back to england a couple of years ago. it is much cheaper for dive centers to hire locals who speak english well enough to give courses than hire expats who expect a lot higher salary and have to work about their english teaching schedule.

indonesia has their own certification that is utter rubbish with only about 25% of the requirements of a PADI or NAUI course. not only is it unsafe to dive with someone that has this cert, but it is not accepted any place other than indo. in other words, u cannot rent tanks or get your tanks filled in any other country if u only have the indo version of the PADI cert.

Thanks TnT,

I'm also PADI Certified and would like to get more certifications while teaching there, but it might be a little more difficult than I thought. I eventually want to work towards my Scuba Diving Instructor, or Master Scuba Diving Certificate but I'm in no rush to do this while teaching. I know the time needed to accomplish this might be very limited depending on the amount of teaching hours I do. That's why I would like a 6 month part-time job teaching to do this, but I'm not sure if anyone can get these kind of contracts there with some perks. It seems that you can only get a year contract so this would certainly limit my time doing it. I also might add... that I don't need a full time job to live comfortably there, as I've made some good investments in the past and I can afford a place to stay as I understand, it's cheap to rent and live there . Even if I don't get a rent allowance from my school I can still swing it, but it would be nice to get one. I don't need to get fully certified during my time there but getting a few certs while teaching would be a great benefit for me. But at the same time like you mentioned; if their certs are only recognize in their own country then this changes everything towards my advancement. Then I guess I can just do this as a recreation sport and just enjoy teaching and diving around Indonesia. Any information on this is greatly appreciated by anyone.

Overall, thanks for your information TnT

kitas and work permits are issued for full time teachers only and for contracts of 1 year or longer. it used to be possible to work part time for a school if u were willing to contribute to the costs for getting your stay and work permits. however with the enforcement of the foreign worker tax of 100/month (must pay 1 year in advance) and income tax. so it is unlikely that u will find a school willing to do this.

go to PADI homepage to find the contact information for authorized dive centers here and see what they have to offer. i am sure there are still some classes on offer and u might be able to do you advanced open water. to get your rescue diver, i think u need to do basic first aid with a red cross type of organization. there is a organization that does marine first aid to train people to work on cruise ships. i dont know if this would qualify or not. again, i think u need to deal with PADI for diving related issues. everything esle is just guesswork. good luck

My dream is not to teach scuba diving and teaching English there but to only get some certs while I'm teaching, so you're not raining on anybody's parade. Maybe I misquoted quoted myself but I'm sure I said doing teaching and scuba diving. I know it would be a hobby and I'm looking answers from somebody who is pursuing the same thing or any information regarding this. I know about all the PADI sites out there, but tell you this information on teaching and scuba diving. All I'm looking for is somebody who's already doing this as a hobby and who I can share some information with. Let's stick to the issue. Finally, I know the situation in Bali and I know I couldn't possibility teach there while taking scuba diving lessons as it's expensive to live there and very few teaching jobs because of the huge competition there, so I'm looking for an alternative elsewhere. After all isn't Indonesia an archipelagos and some of the best diving around world according to this site. http://www.expat.or.id/info/diving.html

So, again I know you need time and money to do this and I realize this. My situation is a little different, I can afford a place to supplement my rent and a little extra to do this while teaching. What would be some of the best places to get teaching jobs and do some scuba diving as well?

But then again.....maybe all the teacher's here are only interested in other alternative hobbies. Don't take this as an insult or anything but I'm only trying to get some concrete answers but I realize this is futile here.
