So wait... a car clipped one of cyclists... then another turned around and hit the victim head on...

But, the police decided that there was no "foul play" ... and the embassy agreed?

Well, that confirms that the two drivers were Saudi, while the bicyclists were not. Rolling Eyes

VS
(although I have to say that I consider it borderline insanity to even think of riding a bicycle in Gulf traffic... any of the countries)

"One of the drivers is then alleged to have turned around and driven straight into the cyclists."

"He said it would be the Saudi authorities responsibility to determine if there was a guilty party involved.

Riyadh police spokesperson Maj. Sami Al-Shwaerikh ruled out the involvement of foul play. He confirmed that investigations were still being carried out and the results would be announced soon."

Now there's a time-saver: the verdict is in before the investigation and its results are known.

And yet, there are those who slur Saudi efficiency.

Regards,
John

Not a slur, per se, but I consider riyadh, itself, to be a tragic accident.

It reminds me of the article I read way back in the Arab News of the "tragic death" of a World-class saudi cyclist who was run over whilst training in the mountains of Asir by a saudi driver...like what VS said, I considered him to have taunted Death...

John, I KNOW that you'll remember it! "Meet me at the Indonesion Restaurant near the 'Bicycle Roundabout'" was one of the most telling direction finders that I ever heard in Jeddah! Without a doubt, I knew where to find it! Laughing ... Shocked ... Laughing

Dear NCTBA,

Most definitely - I even have a photo of me at the base of the bike somewhere. But I couldn't find a picture of the "Thumb" statue that was at an intersection next to where I was living in the early 80s.

What I did find was this:

which I don't recall seeing anywhere. Maybe it was added after I moved to Riyadh.

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2009/8/3/1249304068388/Your-photos-Steve-OConnor-001.jpg

It's down near the end of Corniche North. When people ask me how it was made, I reply, "Made? Why, all they did was keep the concrete wet until, like flypaper catches flies, it caught the appropriate amount of speeding cars to satisfy them!!! You'll note that the yella one almos' got away! Laughing ... Shocked ... Laughing

It's just outside Prince Sultan's palace - on, er, Prince Sultan Street. Been there for almost 20 years to my knowledge.

Dear oldgit,

Thanks - but I may be an oldergit than even you. I left Jeddah in 1984 for Riyadh. So, it likely went up after that.

John

Of course, it's now known locally by its French name "l'oinqueur"

It's quite ironic that Qasr Amir Sultan is located on Sharaah Amir Sultan, no? Or, should I use "coincidental" in this case? Laughing ... Shocked ... Laughing

Dear LCK,
Interesting statistics - though perhaps of only glancing relevance to the story involved.
Actually, if the "allegation" mentioned first is accurate, that was no accident.
It was vehicular homicide.

John
