Sorry for asking - this is most likely in a FAQ somewhere that I couldn't easily locate.
As the title asks - what is the academic year in Japan for mainstream schools and when are the peak hiring periods for the cram schools/academies?
Thanks in advance.
If this is in a FAQ on the forum somewhere - could someone please give a link?

There used to be FAQs, but they disappeared for some reason. The information you are looking for is available elsewhere on the internet though- this from Wikipedia:
"The school year in Japan begins in April and classes are held from Monday to either Friday or Saturday, depending on the school. The school year consists of three terms, which are separated by short holidays in spring and winter, and a one month long summer break."
Cram schools do not hire a lot of foreign teachers- are you thinking of English conversation schools? |

Thanks- I found it as well (google should be my friend).
AND
I was probably thinking of "English conversation schools" as compared to cram schools.
I would go mainstream but at 52 I am too old for the JET program and not really interested in teaching in another university. |

The majority of eikaiwa do not have "terms" although they often key their recruiting efforts to the public school calendar, as that's when students' schedules change. Smaller eikaiwa tend to hire for 1 year contracts 2 or 3 times a year, and the larger ones have openings most times of the year.
November and December is the deadest time of the year for everyone. ALT positions generally come up in Feb/March for April starts (the start of the public school year.) and August for September starts (a lot of people leave during the summer vacation.) |
