|
|
Hello All,
I just interviewed with a university in Saudi. The officials told me my spouse's visa and plane ticket wouldn't be issued until I had passed the initial evaluation at 30 days, and it could be up to 90 days total if the new teacher doesn't pass the initial evaluation.
Is this standard for Saudi contracts? Is this standard for Middle Eastern (I'm mostly concerned with Qatar & UAE) contracts? |

It is NOT standard in UAE, Oman or Qatar. Probation at reputable organizations is 1 academic year with usually 30 days notice either side (no reason necessary). There are exceptions to the latter. If they are not willing to bring your spouse with you at the same time as you travel I would hazard that they are not among the more desireable employers.
Look elsewhere, I see problems in your future if you proceed. |

It's tragically VERY standard for many saudi contracts. Me thinks that KFUPM and a VERY few others of its calibre may be the exception. The only time I brought my bride in was working for the king faisal foundation (and, did I pay the price for accepting THAT little piece of wasta!)
Even my first military contractor's gig (obviously sponsored by a very weak prince) left me and my newly-wed separated for six-months (took her to Cyprus to pay for that 'un!).
So, I'd say 90-days is average to good for someone new to the great sand box.
Good luck!

90 days probation is standard in Kuwait. However spousal sponsorship is usually part of the package here - unless the spouse hired is female. To get your husband here can be much more difficult and sometimes nearly impossible. |

Some do and some don't. I have never heard of a university that makes you do a probationary period. |
