Hi guys
For those of you who are already in Japan, I have a question about setting up the internet in your home.
How hard is it to do? As it is, I have virtually no Japanese (please, no bitching, I know), but would like to have my internet at home set up as soon as humanly possible after arrival. Are there a lot of ISP options in Japan? What is the best way of going about it? Which company would you recommend? What's the average cost?
Thanks in advance for all the help and I'm sure there are others coming to Japan this March wondering the same thing. |

Hi! Are you coming to Tokyo? If so I recommend something called WiMax. You can go to Yamada Denki and sign up for this pay-monthly deal (about 4500Y/month when I got it a few months ago) which comes with a wireless dongle which you just stick in your laptop. The speed is certainly comparable to broadband. You can get a free trial too so you can check that you get reception in your area before you buy it.
It's probably less hassle than setting up a conventional connection and possibly cheaper. You might have some trouble without Japanese though. |

| What you get depends on where you live. There are still some places that have slow (not DSL) connections, while others have DSL or fiber optic cable (hikari fiber) connections. Ask locals for what is most commonly used in your area. |

Eh?
1Mbps download speed (500kbps upload) is perfectly adequate and comes in under 2000/Y per month.
Unless the mobility or a higher transfer rate has value to you, it's a little expensive.

If it's anything like the equivalent service in the UK, it will have horrible latency too. That's not a significant problem if you don't game online, however.

Hmm maybe I've been spoiled by fast internet connections but 1Mbps upload and 500kbps seems a tad old-fashioned to me. With wimax you get about 7Mbps down and 2.5Mbps up.
But you are right. If the speed and the mobility aren't important to you then a wired connection is probably the way to go. |

| KDDI have a telephone helpline in English. It's pretty easy to set up Internet and phone with them. |
