Hi there

My name is Stephan and I have recently completed a TESOL course in Cape Town South africa.

I have spent the last 2 weeks researching and reading everything I can regarding teaching English abroad and I swear my eyes are going to become squares from staring at the screen so much!

I have read nearly every thread in most of the forums in this wonderfull website (suck up .... lol), and have found some very valuable information in here (many thanks ... wow just had the bigeest case of de'ja'vu!!!!)

But I would really love to hear from people who are already in the game, WHICH ARE THE BEST AGENCIES TO SIGN UP WITH.

At the moment I dont really mind which country I go to, I wanted to go to Thailand and probably still will, but I think I'd rather start in a cooler country like Russia or Japan first.

Any suggestions? Please please please?????

I have a 3 year National Diploma from the Durban University ( I dont know if that falls under 'degree' status but I basically have 3 years of tertiary education. The only teaching experience I have is from doing the TESOL course (I got a 'B') but everybody has to start somewhere I guess.

The agencies I am considering so far is Inlingua, English First, Footprints (although they require a degree) and ECC (who also require a degree).

If anybody has been in the ESL teaching profession through an agent, please let me know which are good and reliable ones to sign with. Because I dont want to end up on the wrong side of a deal and then get my ass handed to me after getting to a country and they're like ... "Uh, well actually, ...... this that n the next thing bla bla bla go home on your own account n sorry if you starve out in the streets. You shouldve read the fine print buddy". I really really don't want that situation to arise.

So please, any advice or info would be super awsome Very Happy

Blessings

Steph

You don't need a recruiter to get hired in Japan. ECC is not a recruiter but a full-fledged employer.

I would try to declare that your diploma is equivalent to a college degree. Don't use the word diploma in writing even if it is on your parchment; it may sound inferior to a degree. Three years is certainly enough time, and many other countries have college degrees that take only 3 years.

You don't need any teaching experience, but Japan is full of teachers these days. You may need any edge you can get.

When did you want to start working? April 1st is the beginning of the academic year for most jobs. Come to the Japan forum to learn more.
