There are a number of 'agencies' which place people, just as there are many posts about them.
Some people like to have the security of a placement, especially the young or newbie travellers.
In very broad terms, there is no free lunch. The very good jobs are passed by WOM and are taken by old hands.
I suspect that most agencies are not run on altruism. Some are owned by rich Thais.
If you ARE going to accept this kind of job, you must get as much detail as poss. Many agencies have contracts to place "newbies" in bad jobs in the boonies.
See many, many posts on agencies.

I have lived in Thailand on and off since 1996 but never came across this mob. |

Teaching agencies are making a lot of money these days recruiting volunteer western teachers in the LOS for schools throughout the kingdom. Remember if YOU volunteer it means non-paid wages for you and your teacher agency employer will be smiling all the way to the Thai baht bank Welcome to the LOS! |

Perhaps you are correct. I must ask "what's the guarantee of getting paid from any employer"
The mob also go by the title of:
Paragon Language Learning Center
If there is any insight or experiences into/with this group then please pass on some information.
Thanks |

Your likely to get paid but make sure the amount agreed upon is in writing. Since this school is looking and advertsing mostly for volunteers money isn't really the issue for them...even though it might be for you! TIT. Good luck! |

I work for one of the other staffing firms, and I've heard Teach to Travel is pretty good.
I think the guy running it is a Farang. The business has been going for awhile, and as a rule, any agency that has been around for a few semesters is going to be legit.
I can't guarantee it, but you've got nothing to lose. If there's a problem, you'll find that other opportunities always arise in Thailand. |

True one has nothing to lose at Teach to Travel. Since pay is not a main concern for them or you as a volunteer it should be okay. Just remember if you lose your job with them that Thailand is now full of competing volunteering EFL schools recruiting EFL teachers and most of them are nonpaid Kaosan Road backpackers or tourists with little or no teachng qualifications whatsover! Good luck! TIT |

Once again, gross exageration and conclusion.
Yes, there are more companies that offer volunteer opportunities these days.
There are just as many more low-end jobs and decent jobs available. In fact, there are many more than 5 years ago. Only problem is that there are many more "teachers" competing for those jobs.

No different than many other TEFL jobs in other countries when starting at the bottom of the barrel. How many in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, China, Indonesia, etc have anything other than an unrelated degree when starting out? Gotta get experience somewhere and its usually at the bottom. And if by teaching qualifications you mean a B.Ed or PGCE, than you are right and nobody would expect someone with these qualifications to be getting a job on "Kao San Road" as you say.
The bottom line is that Thailand is not a great place to save a lot of money. It never has been and probably wont ever be. Most people come here and find decent work, make enough to survive and have a decent time, stay for a year or 2 and than leave with not much to show for it except some great memories and an experience.
If money is your primary goal, Korea, Taiwan, the Middle East and others await.
Back to the OP, I have known a few people who have gone the volunteer route just so they didn't have to put up with any crap from the schools or agents and they feel like they are helping (whether they are or not is irrelevant). Haven't heard anything bad about Teach to Travel yet, so that is a good start. |
