|
|
Hi! I am moving to Mexico City in September, and I was wondering about the CELTA courses on offer.
My first question is whether I actually need the qualification, I have a year of experience in teaching English in Spain through the British Council, and so I wasn't sure if that might be enough to get jobs? Or whether I could learn on the job?
If I do need the qualification; would it be better to get the qualification in the UK before I head out, or should I do the qualification out in mexico city, because I read that they could help with finding first jobs?
Any advice would be helpful,
Thanks guys!

I havent answered your poll but was curious, surely to work for the British Council you would already have some related qualification? I know some spurious employers would take anyone with blonde hair and blue eyes, but surely the British Council isnt one of them? |

I worked through the British Council as an English Language assistant in a Primary School, and part of my role was to give English lessons to the teachers in the school, and also to adult learners in the area. All I needed to go on the programme was a degree (which I have) and an interest in teaching (which I definately have!). It was awesome! |

Definitely.
I think a CELTA wouldn't hurt. |

You can take a CELTA at IH-Mexico.
But many (most?) schools have never even heard of a CELTA.
Why?
Most employers hire local (Mexican) English teachers with local certs. I really feel that any TEFL cert will work in Mexico. In fact, the more hours your cert has on it the better. 120 hours is seen as kinda light-weight in Mexico. If you can find an on-line cert that says 200 hours or above. That would look great on your resume. But you can take a course in Mexico for cheap.
And all the chain schools here make you take their own in-house courses, no matter what you have (or don't!) when you walk in their doors. |

Yes they do!
Harmon Hall (very large Mexican chain school), Interlingua, Berlitz, Wall Street Institute (on the verge of going out of business) and Quick Learning (as well as many smaller schools) all have in house training programs that last for 2-4 weeks of unpaid training.
You can take your own CELTA/TEFL/TESOL and find work at some of the smaller language schools or teaching business English (in the bigger cities) without taking another in-house course.
Even an on-line TEFL course will work for entry-level jobs in Mexico. And the more hours the better, anything that's 180 hours or more will look good to schools in Mexico. |
