My boyfriend and I are considering working at GES and would really like to hear some first hand experiences. We are really wondering:
What are the dorms they provide like?
How far do you have to travel between jobs?
Do you end up working lots of split shifts?
How hard are the classes to teach?
I really apprecatiate any imput (even second hand) that you have.
Thanks |

Ok. I worked there.

Well, I never lived in them, having already arranged my own place before talking to them. They are basically free and, well, being free you get what you pay for. Most report that they aren't too bad. Actually, some like them because you get to meet some of your coworkers and can establish a network of friends. Myself, I prefer not to make my Taiwan experience an extension of my college days.

They have something like 15 schools in the Taoyuan county area. This is a fairly large geographical area. To keep a full schedule, and to meet GES' staffing needs, you can expect to work out of several locations. These sometimes can be far apart (though you won't usually be asked to work in different locations on the same day). You'll more or less have to get a scooter if you work for them.

GES is a cram school company, so your main hours are afternoons and evenings. They also have contract classes available at other locations. These are optional hours and you don't have to take them. However, if you do, you may have "split shifts."

Very easy after you learn their system and materials. You team teach with a local coteacher, so communication with the kids is seldom a problem, ditto for discipline. |

PM me if you are interested in any more info. |

Actually the dorms are nicer than any I have experienced back in Canada at two Universities and a Private high school. I am living in them right now and if you are in the one in Png Jen, it is super. Nice size rooms, not overcrowded, although I suppose that can change. But they are in good condition and the school keeps things clean and in working condition.
As for the rest of the school. There is travel involved, but they have changed it recently to no more than three schools. Some people still work at four or five, but they started before the new regulations. But I have found that going to more than one school has really helped me get to know the area as well as give me a little bit of variety. Of course it was very stressful at first, but it doesn't take long to know your way around.
I would definitely recommend Gloria. The area is awesome. You have access to Taipei, but without the crazy prices. Gloria has been very fair and stuck to the contract very well. They have been very good to me!! |

Ah, how I love restarting old posts! Well, not exactly, but wanted to get some more/current info on these schools. My first question is - how was the Visa support? I wanted to check if everything was actually legit. I know a lot of schools promise the Visa/support up front, and then "forget" about it once you're there. Any info would be great.
Thanks.
