Hello there,
I was supposed to have a Skype interview with an English school in Tokyo yesterday at 10pm my time. The director (an Englishman) decided on the time after asking when was best for me. Then, yesterday morning he sent an email and said he had to go to the hospital in the morning and would be a little delayed but may still be able to do the interview and if it's too late then we can reschedule.
He never told me how late was too late and didn't send me any further emails. I waited until 2 a.m. before just going to bed (I know it's a little extreme but I just really wanted to get it over with and didn't want to sign off just to have him sign on two minutes later).
This morning, he still hasn't sent me an email to let me know what is going on. I'm not as angry as I could be because he said he had to go to the "hospital" and hospitals are touchy subjects because you never know what's happening there.
Anyway, some people told me this is bad business and I should take it as a bad sign and others said it's probably an emergency and I should just wait. I plan on waiting, but should I take this into account? I really want to work at this school.
Thanks, Hailie |

Your situation is a little hinky, but I recommend you stay patient. It's too early to decree him as unprofessional and then assume the worst. He may very well have a good excuse, though it did cost you time and energy.
If after some time has passed though, then your instincts may be correct. I'm sorry you've got this bad situation, I hope you the best. |

If this is all we have to go on, I'd say give him the benefit of the doubt and wait. One more day, and you might consider sending a polite email saying that you were disappointed to have missed his call that day, that you hope his hospital situation is not serious, and that you look forward to rescheduling the call. |

Spot on. (Wish there was a thumbs up or +1 sign here)
You have no idea whats happening with him, and it costs you nothing to wait a few days. (I'm guessing you're at home considering you said "my" time)
There's no harm in being polite and it may work for you in the long run to differentiate you from other FTs. |

Hello everyone, I appreciate your replies. I did in fact wait and last night he sent me an apologetic email saying he was in the hospital for "an astonishing seven hours!" He offered to reschedule for tonight the same time. Glenski, like you suggested, I expressed my concern and said it was no problem. I hope the interview will go as planned tonight. Like we've said, you never know what happens in a hospital, especially if he was there for seven hours. Someone could have been dying or his wife could have been in labor, you never know. Once again, thank you for your comments and suggestions. |
