LOL...I like it Scot47. Personally I think quite a few people teaching EFL all over the world have lost these, and not just once or twice! The truly unfortunate lose 'em and never find them again.

Teaching TEFL/TESOL/ESL/EFL/ENGLISHEE increasingly reminds me of this!

http://www.artprints.com/images/TEL/large/telbt3461.jpg

To think we were once fresh faced teachers thinking we were going to make a 'difference' and be appreciated for our efforts (and have normal career progression and increasing pay and benefits) !

Personally speaking and I will state this again, if you have an MA TESOL, a CELTA and 10 years experience if you are earning (including accommodation) less than $4000 it's an insult. I don't care where you are or what you are doing. For people making excuses in Oman (ooh, it's so nice here, $2500 is enough for me! ) blah, blah, it's all quite embarrassing.

So, for anyone considering a career in TEFL -go ahead if you plan on being single and childless all your life, the wages are adequate at least in some countries (ME,KOREA,JAPAN). After 30 years you can retire to that one bedroom condo in hicksville or BKK.

For those of you considering a job in KSA - start playing hardball! Don't let salaries (oops these are a thing of the past ) , wages be driven any lower !

Okay - My rant is over.

Scot... so glad that you finally found what we have all lost over the years. Laughing

I've always thought of Oman as a great place to end your career. That last job before retirement where you can relax a bit, enjoy the job (if it's the right one, of course), gather up one's lost marbles, and still add a bit more cash to the retirement kitty.

Myabe we should organise a collective treasure hunt for these lost items ?
I am not convinced that the ones I found belong to the Sage of Santa Fe. They seem rather dull for such a brilliant wit !

If the Sage of Santa Fe can prove beyond reasonable doubt that these items are his, I shall make every reasonable effort to restore them to him.

I make this statement freely, and of my own volition, but without in any way endangering my legal rights as approved by the first and subsequent meetings of the Supreme Galactic Council.

US$ 48,000 per annum in Saudi Arabia is equivalent to at least US$ 65,000 in America if not more (factoring in the tax, PPP, cost of living, etc.). That's barely the kind of money that people with Ph.Ds teaching academic subjects make there; many, if not most, of them make less. To even suggest that expatiating on the difference between the simple present and present perfect merits anything approaching that kind of compensation is ABSURD!!!

The vast majority of those working in Saudi as EFL teachers would not be able to earn more than US$30,000 p/a GROSS in their home countries, never mind US$ 48,000 net! Indeed, in my experience, some would be lucky to get a job flipping burgers at the minimum wage.

Let's forget comparisons though. Assuming a 40-hour working week, the kind of salary you assert is tantamount to ca. US$ 25 per hour, of which half are not even teaching hours. If you seriously believe that what the average EFL teacher does is deserving of that sum, then - nothing personal, but - you need a MASSIVE dose of reality check.

Our Croatian friend 7atetan likes to make these posts that are difficult to folloow. I posted a flippant post designed to deflate our collective egos. With the help of tefl-lifer, 7thetan (is he a follwer of L Ron Hubbard ?) makes my flippant remark into an oh-so-serious post. Lighten up 7, this is not Zagreb !

From myself and the rest of the -47 Clan, you will hear no overt criticisms of KSA.

Here we go again.

My friend's father has a PhD from Ohio State in Curriculum and Instruction. As an associate professor in Iowa, guess how much he makes... $54k. I make more than him and I'm half his age... and I don't pay taxes... and I get an accommodation allowance... and I get free rides to work in the back of a chicken truck.

You're right, Saudi sucks and it's an insult to work for such a wage (peanuts.) We should go back home and .... wait....

Question Exclamation Question
I have about as much to do with Croatia as your response has with my post. Touched a raw nerve though, it seems. I can see why.

I'd love more details on the chicken truck ride, if you have the time.

It's smaller than the goat/sheep truck and much smaller than the camel truck. Very Happy

Large numbers of us in TEFL are qualified teachers in our home countries. Salaries vary wildly, and so do the different perks (pension and health care in home country + job security versus tax free salary in Gulf), but the difference is not as great as it's made out to be (until the pound tanked it wasn't that great at all).
