Does anyone have any experience/recommendations/opinions on Aston Vietnam? I know they have a bigger presence in China but i'm really curious about their summer intensive program in HCMC. I am from the US, have a BA in English and a CELTA but no experience and just looking for a foot in the door.
Thanks! |

I interviewed with them and they tried to get me to sign a one year contract at $15 per hour. I refused and then they said they would hire me without a contract. I passed, but it probably would be a good place for an inexperienced teacher to start. |

And people should note,
That 8 years ago, $15 dollars was a common wage. Even teachers with 6 months experience could get $15 usd per hour back then.
Now, with higher rents, cost of food, and taxes paid, $15 usd per hour really does not go far in HCMC.
If someone has no experience, it's a good starting point, however.
I look forward to knowing more about Aston HCMC's facilities. |

thanks for the replies. I found it odd that they have information on their website about their Vietnam program, but when you go to apply they only give locations in China as options to choose as a preference. Little inconsistencies on company/school websites always make me feel hesitant about what the experience would be like once hired... |

I got an offer for an interview from them several months ago, but I ended up turning it down. One thing I was put off by was that with a little research, I read that all new teachers will go through their training workshop to learn the "Aston way" or something like that. In my experience with school chains that have intensive training and structured formats (was in another country, not in VN), it was rather bad (i.e. we tell you what to do, how to do it) and they had a high rate of teacher unhappiness. That and a few other things I sensed in a round about way made me not go back. |

Whether Aston Vietnam is definitely an extension of Chinese Aston needs to be ascertained.
I actually think training and a set methodology for teachers are great no matter the quality of either one per se, as it will cut down on all the problems that tend to prop up when the teacher is brought in, given a book (sometimes even not that!) and told to teach
One thing that I thought was a huge con of the Chinese Aston was the lack of training, especially considering how many of its teachers had no prior ESL experience; so if they have finally gotten around to doing it in Vietnam it is a positive development. |

Done.

The school I visited was clean and the teachers did appear to be well supplied. |
